Huge Payoffs on Belmont Stakes Card

For a sharp bettor, the beauty of big race days like the Triple Crown and Breeders’ Cup is that the wagering pools are huge, and a relatively high percentage of money in the pools comes from once-a-year visitors to the track. In other words, the pools are dominated by “square” money. Opportunities abound for astute individuals who have done their homework and have a betting strategy in place. Your profit potential can increase exponentially if you are successful in attacking multi-race wagers, such as Daily Doubles, Pick-3s and Pick-4s.

Below are a few examples of how Saturday’s Belmont Stakes card yielded windfall profits to those sharp enough to take advantage:

When computing the true value of a Daily Double, Pick-3 or Pick-4 payoff, it’s helpful to calculate what a parlay would pay for that same set of races. In other words, what would your payoff have been for a two, three or four-race parlay versus what you actually received for your winning ticket.

The Brooklyn/Belmont Double (winner of Friday’s Brooklyn Handicap coupled with the winner of the Belmont Stakes) paid $550.00 for a $2.00 ticket, for a profit of $548.00. However, the corresponding parlay would have yielded only $258.70 (Brooklyn winner Delosvientos paid $6.60, and Belmont winner Da’ Tara paid $79.00, therefore $6.60/$2.00 = 3.3 x $79.00 = $260.70 - $2.00 = $258.70). $548.00/258.70 = 2.12.

Essentially, the Brooklyn/Belmont Double paid more than twice what the corresponding parlay would have paid…and that, folks, is what we call value.

A parlay of Race #10 winner Dancing Forever ($10.40) and Race #11 winner Da’ Tara ($79.00) would have netted $408.80, while the corresponding Daily Double netted a whopping $1,572.00, nearly four times the parlay payoff.

Let’s look at races that resulted in more modest mutuels. A parlay of the winners of Race #6 (Benny the Bull, $3.00), Race #7 (Ventura, $21.20) and Race #8 (Zaftig, $7.50) would have netted a payoff of $117.25, while the corresponding Pick-3 netted $163.50, a 39 per cent improvement.

This “Big Race Day” phenomenon often occurs to a slightly lesser extent on weekend cards when major stakes races are run, so be prepared to take advantage whenever hordes of people are flocking to the race track.
