Jones Jr. vs Calzaghe odds: last hurrah for Calzaghe

  • WHO: Roy Jones Jr. (+260) vs. Joe Calzaghe (-320)
  • WHAT: Boxing betting
  • WHEN: Saturday, November 8 at 9:00 p.m. ET
  • WHERE: Madison Square Garden in New York, New York
  • KEY STATS: Fight will be contested at light-heavyweight, Jones Jr.’s optimal weight
  • PICK: Jones Jr.

While Joe Calzaghe has willingly decided this will be his final fight, a loss for Roy Jones Jr. would all but spell the end of his prize-fighting career.

Not surprisingly to online sports betting fans, Jones Jr vs Calzaghe odds favor the latter, as the undefeated Welch fighter looks to close out his storied career in grand fashion. After rattling off 43 consecutive victories and several world championships in the middleweight division, the 2007 BBC Sportsman of the Year moved up to light heavyweight and wasted no time in challenging the top of the class.

Calzaghe went the distance with Bernard Hopkins and, according to CompuBox, landed more punches on the 43-year old legend than any other fighter. Despite entering the bout as an underdog on boxing odds, the Welshman was able to use his quickness and rhythm to out-box Hopkins and edge out a split decision.

If you bet on sports regularly, you know it hasn’t been an easy road for Jones Jr. in recent times. The former middleweight, super middleweight, light heavyweight and heavyweight champion was once a boxing betting lock, an absurd sportsbook favorite during every one of his bouts.

But after losses to Antonio Tarver and Glen Johnson, Jones Jr. is fighting to regain his legacy as one of the greatest boxers of all time. He will be in an unfamiliar place as the underdog on the Jones Jr. vs Calzaghe line, opening up at +270.

Jones Jr. vs Calzaghe betting will see plenty of action as the only combat sports event on the Nobember 8 weekend. Calzaghe will be in an interesting position having moved up a weight class. His natural instincts tell him to move forward, as an aggressive fighter, however he’ll surely be outmatched in power.

For Jones Jr., his task will be remaining active enough to win the fight should it go to decision. Throughout his career, Jones Jr. has been known for hanging back on the ropes and counterpunching. At 39 years old, it remains to be seen if he has the lighting quick knockout punch he could once throw on a whim.

ATTELL’S PICK: Boxing odds may not agree, but the elder fighter is the smart Jones Jr. vs Calzaghe pick. If last week’s Pavlik-Hopkins bout was any indication, aggressive fighters moving up a weight class are very susceptible to more powerful counter-punchers.

Despite their age, Roy Jones Jr. and his generation of boxers that dominated the 1990s are by-and-large, superior to the current crop of contenders. Calzaghe has fought one noteworthy fighter in compiling his flawless record—Hopkins—but Jones Jr. won’t make it quite as easy on him this time. Bet on Roy Jones Jr.
