Sugar Bowl odds: a history of the Sugar Bow

UPDATE

BLAKE'S PICK: Sugar Bowl betting has the Crimson Tide as 9.5-point underdogs, but Alabama made headlines for the wrong reasons as All-American tackle Andre Smith was suspended for off-field activities. Smith played a major part in Alabama’s No.22 rushing attack, but the Crimson Tide should still be fine as they bring the No.3 defense into the game. Utah will be aiming to avenge the reputation of mid-majors after Hawaii was thrashed last year by Georgia in this game, but it has its hand full with this fast and tough-tackling Alabama defense. Bet online with the Alabama Crimson Tide to win the SEC’s third straight Sugar Bowl.

The 12-0 Utes are the only unbeaten team in a BCS bowl after winning the Mountain West, and the Crimson Tide were 12-1 after losing to Florida in the SEC title game. These two will meet in the Sugar Bowl on January 2, 2009 in New Orleans, LA.

The Sugar Bowl, along with the Orange Bowl, Fiesta Bowl, Rose Bowl and BCS Championship game comprise the Bowl Championship Series.

Sugar Bowl odds are generally a matchup of either the SEC Champion versus a BCS at-large bid or two BCS at-large bids. It always seems to bring up and enticing matchup.

Sugar Bowl betting has included an SEC team fairly regularly in recent history, as the conference has been a powerhouse. Generally, the top team in the SEC has gone on to the BCS Championship leaving the Sugar Bowl to house the second-best team in the SEC versus a strong school from another conference.

That’s why it’s no surprise that Alabama, an SEC school, leads the pack with eight Sugar Bowl wins. Also, prior to the BCS, Sugar Bowl betting was always between the SEC Champion and an at-large bid.

Sports book odds are up well in advance for this bowl game, which is always played in early January.

For the most part, the Sugar Bowl matchup is housed in the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana. In 2006, though, after Hurricane Katrina destroyed parts of the Superdome, the game was moved to the nearby Georgia Dome, which seemingly provided a home-field advantage to Georgia, which was playing West Virginia in that contest. Even so, West Virginia triumphed with a 38-35 win.

Interestingly enough – not that this impacts the Sugar Bowl spread – but the game houses all of its archived footage, which includes programs, photos, newsreels and other materials. Although many parts of the Superdome were damaged by Hurricane Katrina, the archive was left intact. It was later moved into The Historic New Orleans Collection.
