2008 Saratoga Stakes Betting
There’s an impressive stakes lineup at Saratoga this Saturday, and the track is offering a Pick-4 that covers them all. Let’s see if we can put together a Pick-4 ticket that will give us a shot at a score, but won’t put too much of a strain on our bankroll.
The first leg is the Grade 1 Diana Handicap at 1 1/8 miles over the Mellon Turf Course. Heavy rains earlier in the week have softened up the turf course, so you can toss out all the horses that don’t do as well over anything less than “firm” ground. That includes Wait a While, Vacare and Rutherienne. I’ll use #1-Bit of Whimsy, #2-Dynaforce and #6-Criminologist.
The second leg is the Grade 2 Alfred G. Vanderbilt Handicap at 6 furlongs on the main track. Interestingly, not one of the seven participants has won at Saratoga, and four have never started at the “Spa”. Undefeated Bustin Stones has led at every call in all six of his starts. However, he’ll have plenty of company on the front end in this heat, so I’ll take 2006 Sprint Champ #1-Thor’s Echo to reel in the speed.
The third leg is the Grade 1 Go For Wand Handicap at 1 1/8 miles on the main track. This race should be a walk in the park for 2007 Filly or Mare Champ #1-Ginger Punch. She’s better than ever, and her speed figures tower over those of her competition. If she goes, her entry-mate #1a-Spring Waltz will scratch.
The final leg is the Grade 1 Whitney Handicap, to be run at 1 1/8 miles on the main track. #3-Notional looks like he’s beginning to realize his potential, and enters off a sharp win in the Grade 3 Salvator Mile Handicap at Monmouth. The talented #7-Rising Moon, trained by Rick Dutrow, was compromised by a lung infection in the Grade 1 Suburban Handicap, so I’ll give him another chance. #10-Student Council throws in a big race every so often, and has banked nearly $1.4M in his career, so I’ll use this multiple-Grade 1 winner too.
That gives us a $2 Pick-4 ticket of 1,2,6/1/1/3,7,10 for a total investment of $18. Be sure to bet the Saratoga Stakes Pick-4 at BetOnline.com, where you’ll receive full track odds. Happy gambling!
