NFL betting sharps were shocked and likely lost a few dollars last Sunday as the Washington Redskins, heavily favored on NFL betting lines, handed the lowly St. Louis Rams their first victory of the season.

Quite possibly, bettors then went out, looked at NFL betting odds and saw an easy win for the New York Giants over the struggling Cleveland Browns. However, once again, the underdog prevailed, as the Browns humbled the defending Super Bowl champions, 35-14.

That makes for an interesting Browns vs Redskins spread. After a week of upsets, we’re left with an intriguing contest between two teams moving in completely opposite directions. To put it plainly, Redskins vs Browns betting is a tough task this week, as nobody knows what to expect from either team.

The Redskins’ West Coast offense looked like inner-city mayhem last week. Quarterback Jason Campbell struggled to connect with his go-to receiver Santana Moss, who mustered just two catches for 22 yards.

Campbell threw for 203 yards, but managed to keep his interception-less streak alive at 202 attempts. After climbing the NFC East standings in recent weeks, the Redskins were massive sportsbook favorites, but couldn’t keep the pressure on the feisty Rams squad, resulting in a last-second field goal loss.

Meanwhile, the Browns were faced with the Giants—the one team above the Redskins in the NFC East standings. Throughout the first four weeks of the season, it was the Browns’ offense that looked chaotic and out of synch, but Derek Anderson and Braylon Edwards rekindled their relationship, sending the Pro Bowl wide out on a spree for 154 yards and a touchdown.

Cleveland shocked the Monday Night Football betting audience and shattered NFL football spreads in the lopsided victory.

This week, both teams will have key components back in their lineup. Browns tight end Kellen Winslow is likely to return from an undisclosed groin injury, which will diversify Cleveland’s passing game tremendously.

The Redskins addressed an issue of their own, signing former NFL MVP Shaun Alexander to back of the NFL’s leading rusher, Clinton Portis. Lucky for them, the Browns don’t defend the run very well, so this could be a very nice audition for the former Seahawks back.

While Browns vs Redskins odds favor the home team by the generic seven points, it is unquestionably the Browns who come into the game with momentum in hand. The Redskins secondary is still banged up, with rookie Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie still seeing plenty of action.

For the Browns, confidence is everything in their free-wheeling offensive system set in place by Romeo Crennel, and it would seem that Anderson and Co. are gushing with it right now.

STAN’S PICK: With a Browns vs Redskins line of seven, bet on Cleveland. Now that Derek Anderson isn’t looking over his shoulder to find Brady Quinn, he’ll to settle down and channel his Pro Bowl skill on the road.

In many ways, the Giants offense is very similar to the Redskins offense, in that they both utilize short passes. Fans saw what the Browns secondary was able to do to Eli Manning, and they will look to replicate that this week against Jason Campbell.

Stan Simmons first tasted football through the college game, but his football handicapping has strictly focused on the professional sport. Not many people devote as much time to the NFL as Simmons. For six days a week he works, labors and handicaps the sport, and on the seventh he rests as the games play out. Thoughts or questions? Email Comments@BetOnline.com.
