Online sportsbook odds indicated Minnesota would be one of the top contenders in the NFC, while Tennessee would struggle to compete in the AFC. However, after three games, the Titans have looked like contenders while the Vikings had to make a quarterback change.
This week, Minnesota tries to right the ship when it heads to LP Field to take on Tennessee. Vikings vs. Titans lines give the home team a slight edge.
The Vikings (1-2) turned to Gus Frerotte after Tarvaris Jackson struggled mightily in two straight losses. Frerotte steered the team to a 20-10 win at home over Carolina. However, he really didn’t have to do much as the Minnesota defense was the star of the show, recovering two fumbles and holding the Panthers to 47 yards on the ground.
Frerotte was 16-of-28 for 204 yards, inlcuding a touchdown and a pick, but he managed to stay within the system and, if he can continue to do this, the Vikings’ slumping NFL odds will rise again.
The Titans picked off Houston quarterback Matt Schaub three times in a dominating 31-12 win at home over the Texans, and Tennessee also stopped Houston on 12 of 15 third-down attempts.
Kerry Collins stepped in for the injured Vince Young to throw 189 yards, plus a touchdown and interception on 14-of-26 passing. His mission was much like Frerotte’s: control the ball and limit the turnovers.
With a defense as hot as Tennessee (currently third in the NFL), Collins doesn’t have to be spectacular. And, as ridiculous as it sounds, the sidelined Young could learn something from the veteran Collins.
STAN’S PICK: Vikings vs. Titans betting favors Tennessee by three at home, even though Minnesota has won four straight and seven of 10 overall against this franchise dating back to 1980.
This will come down to a game of mistakes, largely from the quarterback position. Frerotte will have Adrian Peterson in the backfield, but he faces a tough task going up against this Tennessee defense. If the Vikings have to come from behind and depend on Frerotte, it’s over for them. Bet on the Tennessee Titans to improve to 4-0 with a statement win against Minnesota on Sunday.
