How to Play Craps

How to play Craps:

CRAPS game preview

The first roll in a betting round is called the "come out" roll-a new game always begins with this. The come out roll can be made only when the previous shooter fails to make a winning roll, i.e. he fails to make the Point or seven out.

New games begin with a new shooter and, if the current shooter makes his point, the dice are returned to him and a new come out roll begins. It is a continuation of that particular shooter's roll, though the come out roll means a new game is beginning.

The playing surface is divided into three areas; two sides and a center. Each side is a reflection of the other, containing the following areas: Pass and Don't Pass line bets, Come and Don't Come bets, Odds bet, Place bets and Field bets. The center area contains prop bets.

Pass bets win when the come out roll is seven or 11; Pass bets lose when the come out roll is two, three or 12. Don't bets lose when the come out roll is seven or 11, while Don't bets win when the come out roll is two or three.

Here is a list of bets you can make when playing Craps:

Pass Line bet - You win if the first roll is a "natural" (a seven or 11) and lose if it is Craps (a two, three or 12). If a "point" is rolled (four, five, six, eight, nine or 10) it must be repeated before a seven is thrown in order to win. You lose if a seven is rolled before the point.

Odds on Pass Line bet - After a point is rolled you can make this additional bet by taking odds. Each point features different payoff odds. A four or 10 pays 2:1. A five or nine pays 3:2. A six or eight pays 6:5. You only win if the point is rolled again before a seven.

Come bet - The rules are the same as the Pass Line bet, with one exception: you can make this bet only after the point on the Pass Line has been determined. After placing your bet the first dice roll will set the come point; you win if it is a natural (seven or 11) and lose if it is craps (two, three and 12). Other rolls can earn you a win if the come point is repeated before a seven is rolled. If a seven is rolled first, you lose the bet.

Odds on Come bet - The same rules as the Odds on Pass Line bet, except you take the odds on the Come bet instead of the Pass Line bet.

Don't Pass Line bet - Essentially a reversed Pass Line bet. If the first roll of dice is a natural (seven or 11) you lose and; you win if it's a two or three. A roll of 12 means a tie or push with the casino. If the roll is a point (four, five, six, eight, nine or 10), a seven must be rolled before that point is repeated in order to win. If a seven is rolled first, you lose.

Don't Come bet - Essentially a reversed Come bet. After the point has been established, you win if a two or three is rolled. If a seven or 11 is rolled you lose. A 12 is considered a tie, and other dice rolls provide a win only if a seven appears before them on the subsequent throws.

Place bets - Place bets can only be made once the point has been determined. You can bet on a roll of four, five, six, eight, nine and 10. If your placed bet is rolled before a seven, you win. Anything else is a loss.

Place bet payoffs are different depending on the number you bet on. Four or 10 pays 9:5. Five or nine pays 7:5. Six or eight pays 7:6. You can cancel this bet anytime you wish.

Field bets - These bets are for one roll only. If a two, three, four, nine, 10, 11 or 12 is rolled, you win. A five, six, seven or eight result in a loss. Field Bets have the following payoffs: two pays double (2:1) and 12 pays 3:1. Other winning rolls pay even 1:1.

Big Six, Big Eight bets - A win is awarded if a six or eight is rolled before a seven. Both bets pay 1:1.

Proposition Bets - These bets can be made at any time. Excluding the hardways, all are one-roll bets:

  • Any Craps: Wins if a two, three or 12 is rolled. Pays 8:1.
  • Any Seven: Wins if a seven is rolled. Pays 5:1.
  • Eleven: Wins if an 11 is rolled. Pays 16:1.
  • Ace Deuce: Wins if a three is rolled. Pays 16:1.
  • Aces or Boxcars: Wins if a two or 12 is rolled. Pays 30:1.
  • Horn Bet: Acts as the bets on two, three, 11 and 12. Wins if any one of these numbers is rolled. Payoff is determined based on the number rolled. The other three bets are lost.
  • Hardways: Wins if it's thrown hard (sum of pairs: 1-1, 3-3, 4-4...) before it's rolled easy and a seven is thrown. Payoffs: Hard four and 10, 8:1. Hard six and eight, 10:1.

Limits: $1 - $100 per bet (Table max of $1000 in bets)
