A big part of the Kentucky Derby payouts is the fact that bettors can get involved and make the event even more exciting by wagering on the action. Betting on the Derby is one of the most widely accepted sports betting events in America.
All it takes is two dollars to get in on the action and over the course of decorated history of the derby, there have been some big payouts. The horse must place in one of the top three stops to finish “in the money” and depending on if you pick the horse to win, place or show, or whether you bet a single bet or a trifecta (explained below), you can earn different payouts.
In 2010, one of the biggest upsets in Kentucky Derby history occurred when Mine That Bird won as a 50-to-1 shot but believe it or not, that was not the biggest Kentucky Derby payout ever.
| Payout | Horse | Year |
| 91.45-to-1 | Donerail | 1913 |
| 50.6-to-1 | Mine That Bird | 2009 |
| 50.3-to-1 | Giacomo | 2005 |
| 35.2-to-1 | Gallahadion | 1940 |
| 31.3-to-1 | Charismatic | 1999 |
| 30.1-to-1 | Proud Clarion | 1967 |
| 29.6-to-1 | Exterminator | 1918 |
| 24.9-to-1 | Dark Star | 1953 |
| 24.5-to-1 | Thunder Gulch | 1995 |
| 23.72-to-1 | Stone Street | 1908 |

While those are just the straight odds for the horse, there is also a different type of payout you can earned depending on which horses win.
When you bet on a horse to win, they have to finish first and win the race for your bet to win.
When you bet a horse to place, it can finish in either first place or second place and you win.
When you bet a horse to show, it can finish in either first, second or third place and you win your bet.
In the Quinella, you must accurately pick the horses that will finish first and second. Keep in mind that either one can be first and the other one second – the order doesn’t matter.
When you bet an exacta, you pick two horses and the order. You further have to detail which one will win and which will finish second, and they have to finish in that exact order for you to win the bet.
A trifecta is like an exacta with three horses, so you have to accurately pick the horse that will finish first, the horse that will finish second and the horse that will finish third.
This is like a trifecta with four horses.
