Indy Car odds – Kanaan to tame Milwaukee Mile for the third time

Posted by Lee-Roy Buckles on 8/25/2009 7:12:39 AM
Indy Car oddsIndyCar betting odds should be behind Helio Castroneves this week after his emotional win in the Indy 500 last week, but this week’s winner of the ABC Supply Company A.J. Foyt 225 will be a driver who takes his bad luck at Indy out on the Milwaukee Mile, and he’ll claim his third win in four years.
  • WHAT: The ABC Supply Company A.J. Foyt 225
  • WHEN: Sunday, May 31, 3:30 PM ET
  • WHERE: The Milwaukee Mile, Milwaukee, WI
  • KEY STATS: Andretti Green has won three of Indy Car’s five trips to Milwaukee
  • PICK: Tony Kanaan

It seems like everything Castroneves has gone through was building up to Indy, and he seized the moment by winning the 500 for the third time. However, it could be back to reality for Castroneves, whose fifth-place finish last year was his best result at the Mile. Before 2008, he had never broken the top 10.

Tony Kanaan crashed out at the Brickyard for the second straight year, and he had another car capable of contending for the lead. However, he’ll be looking for redemption at the Mile, where he won in 2006 and 2007, and finished third in 2008 for his fifth consecutive top-five at this track. IndyCar betting odds will have him as one of the favorites this Sunday, especially since his team, Andretti Green, knows how to get around the Mile; they’ve won three of the last five years.

Last year’s winner, Ryan Briscoe, was all over the place at Indy, falling out of the lead due to a bad set of tires before racing back to the front. He eventually ended up 15th, and he’s been a bit inconsistent this year since winning the first race of the season at St. Petersburg. But if his pattern continues as it has, Briscoe should be shooting for a top-five in Milwaukee.

Dario Franchitti bounced back from a tough run at Kansas to finish seventh at the 500, leading 50 laps. Franchitti won this event in 2004, and he has four straight top-10s here, including a pair of runner-up finishes to go with his victory.

Scott Dixon stated his intentions to defend his series title by leading a race-high 73 laps at Indy before fading to sixth, and he finished second to Briscoe in last year’s race at the Mile. After a terrible start to the season, Dixon looks to be heating up for the summer, and he’ll be a top IndyCar pick.

Danica Patrick finished third with another impressive run at the Brickyard, but she’s never really challenged at Milwaukee since a 2006 result of fourth. Still, the most popular driver on the circuit has three straight top-fives now, and those looking at Indy Car odds should consider her as a value pick.

Lee-Roy’s Pick: While most of the attention in Indy Car goes to drivers like Castroneves and Patrick, Tony Kanaan could be the best pure driver in the series, which is why I’m making the 2004 Indy Car champion my pick for this weekend. He was shaken up at Indy, which is not surprising when you consider that he hit the wall at about 190 mph, but he usually bounces back strong from adversity. When you’re choosing IndyCar betting this weekend, go with Tony Kanaan.

Born in the betting capital of Las Vegas, Lee-Roy has grown to appreciate the likes of IndyCar and Formula 1 racing, but his first love is the high-speed ovals of NASCAR and he is a HUGE Tony Stewart fan. When it comes to motorsports handicapping, Buckles takes the checkered flag. Thoughts or questions? Email Comments@BetOnline.com.
