NASCAR betting - Busch leads Chase pack into New Hampshire

Posted by Lee-Roy Buckles on 9/16/2009 6:47:27 AM

NASCAR odds: Chase for the Sprint Cup gets underway

  • WHO: NASCAR
  • WHAT: Sylvania 300, Chase for the Sprint Cup
  • WHEN: Sunday, September 14 at 2:00 p.m. ET
  • WHERE: New Hampshire Motor Speedway

The “Chase for the Sprint Cup” kicks off this weekend at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, site of the Sylvania 300 and great online betting.

Kyle Busch enters the 10-race playoff as the point leader, but NASCAR betting odds say defending two-time series champ Jimmie Johnson is the favorite heading into the 1.7-km track. Clint Bowyer dominated at this race last year for his first career win in the Sprint Cup series. Betting on NASCAR is about to shift to the next gear.

Johnson is the favorite at +500, and the No. 48 driver held off Tony Stewart for the win last week at Richmond, making it the second consecutive season that Johnson has entered the Chase on a two-race winning streak.

This is the time of the year when Johnson and his crew shine, and he loves New Hampshire with a pair of wins and a 10.5 finishing average.

Next is the entire JGR stable of Busch (+600), Denny Hamlin (+600) and Tony Stewart (+700). Hamlin’s 6.8 is by far the best finishing average of any current driver at New Hampshire, and the No. 11 driver has three straight third-place finishes coming into this race.

Meanwhile, Stewart was upset with his team after his second-place finish at Richmond, and “Smoke” is getting edgy because he hasn’t won since Watkins Glen last season.

Busch limped to a 15th-place finish at Richmond, but he does have a win at New Hampshire, back in 2006. NASCAR betting odds say that JGR will be a major factor in this week’s race.

You can get plenty of value for your NASCAR betting odds this week. Jeff Gordon (+1400) is struggling, but he’s led the most laps at New Hampshire. Jeff Burton (+2000) has four wins here, most of any active driver. Kevin Harvick (+1000) has finished eighth or better in seven of his last eight starts. Any of these veteran drivers would be a great pick when betting on NASCAR.

Lee-Roy’s Pick: Last year no one expected Bowyer, who made his first Chase, to roll through the field at New Hampshire like he did. This year’s surprise winner should be Matt Kenseth, who qualifies well here (18.5) and finishes even better (10.9).

The No. 17 driver has been his usual consistent self this season, but a win would catapult him into the championship picture, and with NASCAR betting odds of +2000, the 2003 champion is a great value pick. Bet on Matt Kenseth to take the checkered flag at New Hampshire.

Born in the betting capital of Las Vegas, Lee-Roy has grown to appreciate the likes of IndyCar and Formula 1 racing, but his first love is the high-speed ovals of NASCAR and he is a HUGE Tony Stewart fan. When it comes to motorsports handicapping, Buckles takes the checkered flag. Thoughts or questions? Email Comments@BetOnline.com.
