Most in the online sports betting industry are ready to give the Sprint Cup to Jimmie Johnson, as he’s a massive favorite to claim his third consecutive Cup according to NASCAR odds in our sportsbook.
However, there are still races to be run, such as this week’s Dickies 500 at Texas Motor Speedway, and NASCAR betting favors Johnson to duel with Carl Edwards for the checkered flag. But those who are betting online for this race should consider another Chase contender with a great pedigree at Texas, 2003 Cup champion Matt Kenseth.
Edwards is favored with NASCAR odds off +365 in Texas, where he has a pair of wins including the spring race in April. Edwards is also coming off a big win at Atlanta last week, but he could still be disappointed that Johnson stormed to second, meaning Edwards’ deficit actually increased even though he won the race.
Johnson is next in NASCAR lines at +485 as the defending race-winner in this event. After being down a lap early in Atlanta, and a surge from 11th to 2nd over the final eight laps, the No. 48 team showed why it’s the best in the business.
Crew chief Chad Knaus made a risky call to come in for tires late when no one else did, and with Atlanta’s abrasive surface, the difference between new and old tires was massive. Last year’s win here was Johnson’s first in Texas, but his 8.5 finishing average in 10 races is the best among active drivers.
Kenseth’s duel with Johnson over the final laps of last year’s fall race in Texas was probably the best of the season, as the two banged doors side-by-side. Kenseth fell short this year, but he comes into this race with NASCAR odds of +915 after a solid fourth-place run at Atlanta, in which he led a race-high 128 laps. The No. 17 driver has a 10.2 finishing average in 12 races here, second only to Johnson.
Johnson’s Hendrick teammate, Dale Earnhardt Jr., generally fares well at Texas with a 12.8 finishing average, and he comes in this week with NASCAR odds of +1050. The No. 88 driver fought a loose car all day at Atlanta, but he brought it home in 11th place (and in one piece).
“Junior” has a win here, but it was back in the spring race of 2000, so Earnhardt would love to head back to Victory Lane at Texas.
LEE-ROY’S PICK: NASCAR betting should favor Johnson and Edwards, who have been the dominant drivers as of late by combining to win three of the last five races. However, Kenseth has a six-year streak on the line as he has won a race every year since 2001.
Kenseth loves racing here and he’s far too good not to win a single race this season. For your NASCAR picks, bet on Matt Kenseth to take the checkered flag at Texas for the first time since 2002.

Born in the betting capital of Las Vegas, Lee-Roy has grown to appreciate the likes of IndyCar and Formula 1 racing, but his first love is the high-speed ovals of NASCAR and he is a HUGE Tony Stewart fan. When it comes to motorsports handicapping, Buckles takes the checkered flag. Thoughts or questions? Email Comments@BetOnline.com.
