NASCAR Betting – Johnson’s roll continues at Atlanta
NASCAR Betting Odds: Pick Jimmie Johnson +400 |
Online betting players could be preparing for another Jimmie Johnson onslaught as the four-time defending champion won his second straight race last week. A couple of drivers will have something to say about that when the Sprint Cup series heads to Atlanta for the Kobalt Tools 500, and they offer better value, but how can you really bet against Johnson right now? We’re not, not with his record in Atlanta.
WHAT: NASCAR betting
WHEN: Sunday, March 7, 2:00 PM ET
WHERE: Atlanta Motor Speedway, Hampton, GA
KEY STAT: Jimmie Johnson’s 8.8 average is the best among active drivers in this race
Jimmie Johnson is the favorite at +400, and the No.48 driver is showing no signs of slowing down after his second straight win last week in Las Vegas. Johnson won this race back in 2007, and his 8.8 average in eight races is the best among active drivers, finishing ninth in last year’s race behind eventual winner Kurt Busch. However, he did have an axle problem in the fall Atlanta race, which was won by Kasey Kahne.
Jeff Gordon is next at +800, and he dominated last week’s race in Las Vegas, leading 219 laps, but a late-race decision to take two tires when everyone else took for held him back for a third-place finish. Gordon has won once at Atlanta, in the 2003 fall race, and he finished second to Busch in this race last year.
Kyle and Kurt Busch comes in at +1000 and +1400, respectively, and the brothers have won the last two spring races at Atlanta, with Kyle preceding Kurt’s 2009 victory. However, those may have been anomalies, as Kyle’s win was his only top-10 in five spring races at Atlanta, while Kurt has just two in nine spring races. Kyle finished 15th last week at their hometown track in Las Vegas, while Kurt, the polesitter, was involved in a wreck.
Tony Stewart is one to watch in your sportsbook +1400, and the No.14 driver has been quiet to start the season, but quiet is good: last week’s seventh-place run was his second top-10 of the year. Stewart won the 2002 spring races at Atlanta, his 10.8 average in 10 spring races is fourth, and he’s also good at Atlanta overall with a 9.2 average in 18 races, edging out Gordon.
Two drivers with longer odds, but with chances to win are Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Matt Kenseth at +1800, and Earnhardt won this race back in 2004, with an average of 10.5 which is just better than Stewart. Kenseth has five top-10s in 10 spring races here, and finished one spot behind Earnhardt in 12th place after last year’s race. Kenseth is coming in with a head of steam, though, as he ran fifth at Las Vegas.
Lee-Roy’s Pick: It’s tough to pick anyone other than Johnson to win anything in NASCAR because if you haven’t noticed, the guy is really, really good. He also does well in races where his sponsors, Lowe’s and Kobalt Tools, are at the forefront as he wants to put on a show for the companies that assist him throughout the season. He has the best average finish in the Kobalt Tools 500, and we all know what he’s done at Lowe’s Motor Speedway (six wins since 2003). Take Jimmie Johnson to go three in a row this week.
