(Numbers as of Friday, May 6th)
Padres Brewers Betting – Monday, 8:10 PM ET
Mat Latos (0-4, 4.55) gets the ball for the Padres, and he says his shoulder is starting to feel healthier, which explains the slow start. Zack Greinke (0-1, 9.00) was hit hard in his Milwaukee debut by Atlanta, allowing five runs on five hits over four innings, but there was always going to be some rust after he missed the first month with a broken rib.
Latos has faced the Brewers only once in his career, taking a 2-1 loss at home, but he pitched well, allowing a pair of runs in six innings, although both of those runs came on homers. Greinke will be facing the Padres for the first time, and he’ll be pitching in front of his new fans for the first time, so he should be better than he was against the Braves. Both of these guys have great stuff, but injuries have had a direct impact on them in 2011. We expect them to be fine for this start.
Betting Edge: San Diego Padres
Phillies Marlins Betting – Tuesday, 7:10 PM ET
This could be the best pitching matchup of the week for MLB betting players as these East rivals get together in Florida, as Roy Halladay (5-1, 2.19) will go up against Josh Johnson (3-1, 1.68). Halladay continued to roll in a 7-3 win over Washington at home, he’s now given up two runs or less in six of his last seven starts, and he had at least 10 strikeouts in two of his last three starts. Johnson took his first loss of the season in St. Louis, giving up five runs in 7.1 innings, but prior to that, the Florida ace had given up one run over four starts.
Halladay is 4-2 in seven starts against the Marlins, posting a 2.30 ERA, and remember, he tossed a perfect game last May at Sun Life Stadium, where he is 3-1 with a 2.57 ERA. Johnson is 5-3 in 13 outings against the Phillies with a 3.34 ERA, and he was also on the mound the night of Halladay’s perfect game, a 1-0 win for Philadelphia. Two weeks later, Johnson hurled a three-hitter over eight innings against Halladay in a 2-0 win for Florida, so we don’t expect the hitters to have it easy on Tuesday night.
Betting Edge: Philadelphia Phillies
Cardinals Cubs Betting – Wednesday, 8:00 PM ET
Jake Westbrook (2-2, 6.14) has earned a pair of no-decisions in his last two starts, although he was pretty good against Florida, giving up three runs in 6.1 innings, and he struck out eight without a single walk. He has won both of his career starts against the Cubs, posting a 3.97 ERA, and one of those wins came at Wrigley Field, although Westbrook struggled with control (four walks, two strikeouts over 5.1 innings).
Matt Garza (1-3, 3.96) still has to pitch on Friday at home against Cincinnati, and he’s been all over the place since coming over from Tampa Bay in the offseason. He has a no-decision in his lone start against the Cardinals, posting a 12.46 ERA, and we have no idea what Garza we’re going to get. It looks like he’s starting to get used to Chicago, but he has been good at Wrigley: prior to Friday’s start, Garza was 0-1 with a 1.89 ERA in Chicago.
Betting Edge: Chicago Cubs
Diamondbacks Giants Betting – Thursday, 3:45 PM ET
Daniel Hudson (2-4, 5.30) will also be in action this Saturday in San Diego, while Matt Cain (2-2, 3.28) will be on the hill on Friday at home against Colorado, so both should be good to go for this game. Hudson is 2-1 in three outings against the Giants with a 3.15 ERA, and he won his lone start at AT&T Park, posting a 2.57 ERA. Hudson also has a 3-2 career record in nine day games, along with a 4.44 ERA, while Cain has been average in the afternoon, going 23-24 in 67 starts with a 3.38 ERA. The San Francisco hurler is 7-4 in 18 starts against the Diamondbacks, posting a 3.19 ERA.
Hudson would be going for his third straight win on Saturday, while prior to Friday, Cain hadn’t won in three starts, so it’ll be interesting to see what’s at stake on Thursday afternoon in AT&T Park. Regardless, the edge goes to Cain in our online betting picks.
