Braves vs Phillies Odds - Pitching depth will keep Braves in the playoff hunt

Posted by Dale "Skip" Lalonde on 8/28/2009 10:52:23 AM
MLB betting oddsThe Braves vs Phillies odds will tell online betting fans a lot about the NL East down the stretch. If Atlanta wins the series, the division could still be up for grabs. If the Phillies romp, they’ll essentially lock up the crown. Can the Braves defy the odds on the road?

Braves vs Phillies Odds: Braves starters have sterling track records against the Phillies

  • Unflappable Tommy Hanson will shock the Phillies
  • Lowe good, but none better than Cliff Lee right now
  • Jair Jurrjens, Brian McCann have a license to kill Philly

Tonight, 7:05 p.m. ET
Braves vs Phillies odds: Tommy Hanson (9-2, 3.12) vs Pedro Martinez (2-0, 5.14)

Tonight’s pitching matchup is a real treat, pitting the next great star vs perhaps the best pitcher of his generation. Tommy Hanson has been a revelation to say the least for the Braves and MLB betting fans alike, winning like crazy, keeping his homer rate relatively low and striking out batters at a healthy rate. He doesn’t pick his spots either; in 11.1 innings against the Red Sox and Yankees this season, he’s allowed zero runs and won twice. He also has a 2.70 road ERA, so even a trip to intimidating Philly may not scare him.

That Pedro Martinez got bullied by a depleted Mets offense tells me the Braves can get to him. Bet on Atlanta to upset Philly in the opener.

Saturday, August 29, 7:05 p.m. ET
Braves vs Phillies odds: Derek Lowe (12-8, 4.48) vs Cliff Lee (5-0, 0.68)

I wouldn’t bet on it at the sportsbook, but Cliff Lee is making an improbable run at the National League Cy Young award. Just five starts into his Phillies career, he’s won every start and posted ridiculously stingy numbers. Don’t even bother researching his career numbers against the Braves (which are good); this incarnation of Lee is a new beast and you simply can’t bet against him. Even though Derek Lowe is a sparkling 5-1 with a 2.64 ERA against the Phillies, he’ll have to pitch a shutout to win.

Sunday, August 20, 8:05 p.m. ET
Braves vs Phillies odds: Jair Jurrjens (10-8, 2.91) vs Joe Blanton (8-6, 3.88)

Two of the NL’s most underrated pitchers go head to head in the rubber match Sunday night. Despite his lack of fanfare, Jair Jurrjens has been remarkably consistent, sporting a 2.91 ERA before the All-Star break and 2.90 ERA after it. He’s been a legit Philly killer this season, going 2-0 with a 0.92 ERA over three starts. Particularly impressive is the one homer allowed against such a powerful group.

Joe Blanton has faced Atlanta four times this season and, interestingly enough, the Braves have his number when he pitches at home. In 12 innings against Atlanta at Citizens Bank Park, the Braves have torched him for 13 runs. Don’t be surprised if Blanton curls up in a ball and starts sucking his thumb when Brian McCann comes up; McCann bats .462 with two homers in 13 at-bats against him.

MLB betting breakdown: Outlook and Pick

Like the Giants, the Braves are staying in the hunt thanks to their deep pitching staff. That depth will shine through as they capitalize on their favorable matchups this weekend.

DALE’S PICK: Braves to take two of three
