Cardinals vs Rockies odds: Chris Carpenter (16-4, 2.34) vs. Aaron Cook (10-6, 4.47) After being shelled by Atlanta two starts ago, Carpenter rebounded nicely, tossing eight innings of shutout baseball in a 2-1 victory. It was his second shutout of the month after he threw a complete game one-hitter against Milwaukee a few weeks ago. He's a big reason why the Cards will be a big factor in MLB playoff odds. Cook, on the other hand, is making his first start in over a month after missing time with a shoulder strain. Perhaps the break served him some good; he was 0-3 with a 12.19 ERA in August. No doubt about it—the Cardinals and Carpenter have a big edge here.

Cardinals vs Rockies odds: Adam Wainwright (18-8, 2.59) vs Ubaldo Jimenez (14-11, 3.47) Wainwright already has a few good seasons under his belt, but he's truly come into his own this year. He's come back to earth a bit this month after a surreal July and August, but his numbers are still impressive (2-1, 3.46 in four September starts). Jimenez is enjoying about as fine a season you can have in Colorado as a pitcher. The Rockies have won eight of his last 10 starts and he's coming off a one-run effort against Arizona. Give a slight betting edge to Jimenez in this one—he pitches well at Coors, where Wainwright must make some adjustments.

Cardinals vs Rockies odds: Kyle Lohse (6-8, 4.81) vs Jorge De La Rosa (15-9, 4.42) It's been a tough year for Lohse, and things haven't gotten any easier as the season progressed. He's sporting an 6.10 ERA in three September appearances (two starts) and the righty hasn't enjoyed a particularly strong effort since early August. Journeyman De La Rosa was on a bit of a hot streak, leading the Rockies to four straight victories, before melting down against San Diego last week (six runs in 2.1 innings), although the offense bailed him out. This should be a tight contest, but look for De La Rosa to get back on track. DALE'S PICK: Rockies win two of three
