Dodgers vs Cardinals Odds - Dodgers will bring out the best in Cards

Posted by Dale "Skip" Lalonde on 4/24/2012 9:52:08 AM
baseball bettingThe Dodgers vs Cardinals odds mean more to St. Louis than they do to Los Angeles. The Dodgers are doing just fine in the NL West, coasting toward the playoffs, but the Cardinals have lost first place in competitive Central. They desperately need a strong offshore sportsbook showing to stay in the playoff hunt.

Dodgers vs Cardinals odds: St. Louis pitchers are great at home

  • Wolf is good, but no one better than Carpenter in the NL right now
  • Wainwright has never been better
  • Manny Ramirez should slay Joel Pineiro

Tonight, 7:05 p.m. ET
Randy Wolf (5-4, 3.45) vs Chris Carpenter (8-3, 2.26)

The Dodgers vs Cardinals odds open with a tough matchup for innings eater Randy Wolf as mighty Chris Carpenter takes the mound for the Cards. However, we shouldn’t immediately write Wolf’s betting lines off; he’s great on the road this season, sporting a 2.90 ERA. He also handles St. Louis reasonably well in his career (3.70 ERA) and has held Albert Pujols homerless over 14 at-bats.

While Wolf should keep the Cards in the game, he won’t do enough to help L.A’s Dodgers vs Cardinals odds. Carpenter simply has too much going for him; he’s undefeated in his career against the Dodgers, he dominates at home (4-1, 1.85) and he has an improved lineup behind him with the Matt Holliday acquisition. Go with St. Louis.

MLB betting pick: Cardinals

Tuesday, July 28, 8:15 p.m. ET
Chad Billingsley (10-5, 3.72) vs Adam Wainwright (11-6, 2.95)

Tuesday’s Dodgers vs Cardinals odds treat us to another hot pitching matchup. Chad Billingsley has really struggled of late but excelled in his most recent start. There’s no doubting his ability, but he may be fatigued from topping 100 pitches in virtually every start. He’ll have a decent chance to succeed at Busch Stadium, where he’s allowed just one run in 10 career innings.

However, like Wolf, Billingsley’s counterpart will be tough to beat. Wainwright has a 2.37 home ERA and is positively on fire right now, sporting a 3-1 record and 1.41 ERA in July. He’s hot and Billingsley’s not, so I like the home team’s Dodgers vs Cardinals odds again.

MLB betting pick: Cardinals

Wednesday, July 29, 8:15 p.m. ET
Clayton Kershaw (8-5, 2.96) vs Joel Pineiro (9-9, 2.95)

Boy oh boy – it’s tough to bet against Clayton Kershaw’s Dodgers vs Cardinals odds. The phenom has shut out his opponents five times in his last eight starts and sports a 0.90 July ERA. With his curveball working, he’s virtually unhittable right now.

Speaking of unhittable, Joel Pineiro has evolved into a ground ball machine and may be having his career year. While he should pitch well Wednesday, he has to hope Manny Ramirez doesn’t play; ManRam bats .448 with four homers in 29 career at bats against Pineiro.

Go under the MLB betting total and pick the Dodgers on the strength of the sizzling Kershaw and the Manny factor.

MLB betting pick: Dodgers

Thursday, July 30, 8:15 p.m. ET
Hiroki Kuroda (3-5, 4.57) vs Kyle Lohse (4-6, 4.35)

The series finale features two effective hurlers slowly making their way back from DL stints. Kuroda could be in trouble, as his splits don’t favor him; he has a 4.99 road ERA and 4.87 night-game ERA. He’s never faced the Cards and, though first-time matchups usually favor the pitcher, you have to wonder how he’ll get Albert Pujols out.

Lohse has struggled since returning but most of those problems come on the road. At home, he’s 4-3 with a 3.20 ERA. He should do just enough to lead the Cards to another victory.

MLB betting pick: Cardinals
