Rangers vs Yankees Odds - Why the Rangers will make a surprising statement

Posted by Dale "Skip" Lalonde on 8/25/2009 12:05:36 PM
baseball bettingThe Rangers vs Yankees odds mark a critical point in the season for the Texas Rangers. They’ve been an online betting surprise all year, hanging in the Wildcard race longer than anyone expected. Still, if they don’t make a major statement against the Yanks, they could slide out of contention. What will happen in the Bronx this week?

Rangers vs Yankees odds: Home woes will sink Yankee starters

  • “Joba Rules” are messing with Chamberlain’s mind
  • Andy Pettitte still hasn’t figured out his new stadium
  • Burnett should dominate Nippert in the series finale

Tonight, 7:05 p.m. ET
Kevin Millwood (9-8, 3.48) vs Joba Chamberlain ((8-3, 3.98)

Kevin Millwood has performed like a borderline ace for Texas in MLB betting this season – at home. He’s 8-1 with a 2.83 ERA at Rangers Ballpark but 2-6 with a 4.28 ERA on the road. He allowed three runs and nine hits over 5.2 innings against the Yanks the last time out, so he’s certainly beatable.

Then again, Joba Chamberlain may open the door for Millwood and the Rangers to pull off an upset. Struggling to find the plate, Joba has allowed four earned runs in three straight starts. New York’s “Joba Rules” have him resting for longer-than-normal periods of time between starts and you have to wonder if that’s messing with his rhythm. Go with Texas’ Rangers vs Yankees odds.

MLB betting pick: Rangers

Wednesday, August 26, 7:05 p.m. ET
Derek Holland (7-7, 4.72) vs Any Pettitte (10-6, 4.25)

You probably want to bet under the total at your sportsbook in this one, as Holland and Pettitte are two of baseball’s hottest pitchers right now. The rookie Holland has dazzled with his 2.13 ERA in August and ability to pitch deep in games. Meanwhile, Pettitte has a 2.82 ERA and 47 strikeouts in 44.2 innings since the All-Star break. However, though he’s improved lately, Pettitte hasn’t pitched well at New Yankee Stadium, allowing 13 homers in 82 innings. Facing a Texas lineup that includes sizzling Marlon Byrd, who bats .500 off Pettitte lifetime, he could be in trouble. Take a flier on the Rangers and you could get a serious return in the Rangers vs Yankees odds, as Holland’s rookie status will make his team a major underdog.

MLB betting pick: Rangers

Thursday, August 27, 1:05 p.m. ET
Dustin Nippert (4-2, 3.95) vs A.J. Burnett (10-7, 4.08)

Who would’ve thought Dustin Nippert’s ERA would be lower than Burnett’s this late into the season? He’s been somewhat effective for Texas, though his numbers are misleading. On the road, he’s 1-2 with a 5.14 ERA. He’s also allowed four or more runs in two of three starts. He’s never faced the Yankees, so it’s tough to forecast his Rangers vs Yankees odds, but I’d bet that the Yankees bully him. A.J. Burnett is 4-1 at home and has pitched decently against Texas in his career, going 3-2 with a 3.99 ERA. He’ll get more than enough run support to handle the Rangers.

MLB betting pick: Yankees
