Red Sox vs Yankees Odds - New York will prevail in last Sox-Yanks series before playoffs

Posted by Dale "Skip" Lalonde on 9/25/2009 10:22:57 AM
baseball linesThis weekend's Red Sox vs Yankees odds will be the last we see before the playoffs begin, and if you're betting online you'll surely want to gauge where these teams are at before the postseason arrives. Based on the upcoming pitching matchups, the Yanks should come away with two wins in this three-game series.

Red Sox vs Yankees odds: Sabathia and Co. will keep Yankees rolling

  • Lester is reaching "ace" territory for Boston
  • Another Cy Young could be in Sabathia's near future
  • Old man Pettitte still effective; old man Byrd isn't

Friday, Sept. 25 @ 7:05 p.m. ET
Red Sox vs Yankees odds: Jon Lester (14-7, 3.33) vs Joba Chamberlain (8-6, 4.72)

Lester is on a roll; the Red Sox have won seven straight starts by the young lefty. He's been particularly brilliant of late, going 4-0 with a tiny 1.67 ERA in four starts, while striking out 28 batters in 27 innings. Lester is approaching "ace" territory if he's not already there. The Chamberlain "inning limit" experiment isn't working. The big righty is limited to three or four innings at most to save his arm, and the results haven't been good, with an ERA over eight in the past two months. He's coming off a three-inning, seven run disaster against Seattle. There's no doubt about it - sportsbook fans should lean heavily in Boston's favor in this matchup.

Saturday, Sept. 26 @ 4:10 p.m. ET
Red Sox vs Yankees odds: Daisuke Matsuzaka (3-5, 6.80) vs C.C. Sabathia (18-7, 3.31)

We're in Boston is beginning to regret the gigantic payday it gave the unproven Dice-K. Despite struggling with injuries for most of the season, Matsuzaka has pitched well in his recent return, going 2-0 with a 2.38 ERA. He's never been one to go deep in games though, so expect to see the bullpen up early. The Yankees, on the other hand, have to be thrilled with Sabathia's production. The hefty hurler has been Cy Young worthy, and the Bronx Bombers have won his last 10 starts. Sabathia hasn't allowed more than three runs since August, so don't expect the Sox to rattle him. Bet on the Yankees.

Sunday, Sept. 27 @ 1:05 p.m. ET
Red Sox vs Yankees odds: Paul Byrd (1-2, 6.04) vs. Andy Pettitte (13-7, 4.15)

Byrd was brought in to eat some innings in the rotation and, well, he's pitched like a 39-year-old. He was torched in Kansas City last week (6.2 IP, 9 H, 5 ER, 4 BB, 0 K) and he's certainly not the key to any long-term success in Beantown. Pettitte has been steady; the Yankees have lost his last two starts but, before that, they'd won seven consecutive games behind the veteran. He's not what he used to be, but he can still get the job done—and he will against Boston. Sports betting odds once again favor New York.
