Yankees vs Angels Odds - Angels should edge Yanks in high-scoring affair

Posted by Dale "Skip" Lalonde on 9/21/2009 9:19:55 AM
baseball betting 2009The Yankees vs Angels odds don’t mean much as the MLB betting regular season winds down. Each team has a massive lead in its own American League division, so the series is more about sewing up the division crowns than anything else. Which team is more likely to pull it off this week?

Yankees vs Angels Odds: Pitching matchups suggest we’ll see plenty of runs

  • Joe Saunders will serve up a platter of taters
  • Ervin Santana and the Angels are a sneaky play on Tuesday
  • Scott Kazmir handles the Yankees better than most

Tonight, 10:05 p.m. ET
Yankees vs Angels odds: Andy Pettitte (13-6, 4.14) vs Joe Saunders (13-7, 4.75)

The good news for Andy Pettitte and the Yankees’ sportsbook odds: he’s 8-2 with a 3.52 ERA on the road this season and 5-1 with a 3.06 ERA since the All-Star break. The bad news; the Angels have rocked him for 11 runs over 10 innings this season and he has a 4.70 lifetime ERA against them.

Then again, Joe Saunders is a gopher-ball dispenser. He has a 7.97 career ERA against the Bronx Bombers. He’ll have to pitch around…well, a third of the Yankee lineup. Alex Rodriguez bats .500 all-time off Saunders; Derek Jeter (.455) and Johnny Damon (.400) aren’t far behind. Go with the Yanks.

Yankees vs Angels odds: Chad Gaudin (1-0, 3.68) vs Ervin Santana (7-8, 5.43)

Get ready to bet over the total – way over – in your online betting for Tuesday. Chad Gaudin has been a useful innings eater since joining the Yanks but that could change against the Angels, who rocked him for eight runs, 10 hits and two homers over three innings when he faced them as a Padre earlier this season.

Ervin Santana’s home numbers are hideous – 1-5 with a 7.24 ERA this season – but they’re deceiving. He’s pitched quite well in his last three home starts and even tossed a complete-game shutout against Tampa during that span. He’s a better bet than the Yankees with Gaudin on the hill.

Wednesday, September 23, 3:35 p.m. ET
Yankees vs Angels odds: A.J. Burnett (11-9, 4.22) vs Scott Kazmir (9-8, 5.08)

The Yankees and Angels save their best for last as strikeout machines A.J. Burnett and Scott Kazmir clash Wednesday afternoon. A.J. Burnett has hit the skids after pitching well for most of the season. For seven straight starts, he’s alternated good and bad performances. He allowed one run in his last start so it makes sense to expect struggles for Burnett against L.A.

Meanwhile, Scott Kazmir is 2-0 against New York this season and has a 1.42 ERA in four starts since joining the Angels. He’s one of the game’s best Yankee killers, sporting a 2.53 ERA and 82 strikeouts in 81.2 career innings against New York. You have to trust him on Wednesday.
