Yankees vs Red Sox Odds - Why Red Sox won’t gain ground this weekend

Posted by Dale "Skip" Lalonde on 8/24/2009 1:10:32 PM
MLB oddsThe Yankees vs Red Sox odds is typically a matchup of two teams fighting for the American League East crown, but as we move towards the end of August, the two teams are heading in opposite directions. Online betting cappers know that as long as the Yankees win just one game, the Red Sox won’t gain much ground.

Yankees vs Red Sox odds: Yankees have the edge in starting pitching

  • Yankees are 24-8 since All-Star Break; Red Sox 14-17 in that same span
  • Pettitte pitches much better on the road than at home
  • Burnett has a 2.55 ERA over his last three starts

Friday, August 21, 7:10 p.m. ET
Andy Pettitte (9-6, 4.09) vs Brad Penny (7-7, 5.22)
Sportsbook odds: Red Sox -110

The Yankees vs Red Sox odds are virtually even on Friday because of two factors: the Yankees are hot right now, and they have the edge in the pitching matchup. Pettitte has been a good back end starter for the Yankees this season, but he’s struggled to adjust to the new Yankee Stadium. On the road, though, Pettitte is 5-2 with a 3.17 ERA and opposing batters are hitting just .237 against him.

Penny has really struggled recently. In his last four starts, Penny has given up 19 earned runs over 22.2 innings pitched. His biggest problem has been the long ball. He’s allowed six home runs in that span.

Saturday, August 22, 4:10 p.m. ET
A.J. Burnett (10-6, 3.69) vs Junichi Tazawa (1-2, 5.40 ERA)

The Yankees vs Red Sox odds should again benefit the Yankees on Saturday because of the pitching matchup. Burnett has been very sharp over his last three starts, giving up just six earned runs in his last 21.2 innings pitched. But he has struggled against the Red Sox this season – he’s started three times against the Red Sox and his ERA is 6.46 in those starts - which means Yankees vs Red Sox odds buyers must beware on Saturday.

Tazawa has only made three starts with the Red Sox this season and although his ERA isn’t bad, he’s given up tons of base runners, which MLB betting cappers know will eventually come back to haunt him. Tazawa has a 2.05 WHIP this season. Expect Saturday’s affair to be a high-scoring one.

Sunday, August 23, 8:05 p.m. ET
C.C. Sabathia (14-7, 3.58) vs Josh Beckett (14-4, 3.38 ERA)

Sunday Night Baseball ought to be a pitcher’s duel, but both staff aces come into this game at different ends of the spectrum. Yankees ace C.C. Sabathia has been stellar over his last three starts, giving up just three earned runs in his last 23.1 innings pitched while striking out 26 batters and walking just five.

On the flip side, Beckett is coming off one of his worst starts of the season. He allowed seven earned runs and nine hits (three home runs) in 5.1 innings of work on August 18th. Beckett is a perfect 8-0 at home this season with a 2.58 ERA, and opposing hitters are batting .199 against him at Fenway Park. Look for him to bounce back on Sunday night.
