San Francisco Giants odds – Must start building around Lincecum, Cain

Posted by Dale "Skip" Lalonde on 8/25/2009 1:35:22 PM
San Francisco Giants oddsSan Francisco Giants odds are anchored by a brilliant pitching staff, led my young stars Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain. You won’t find a team in the Majors that doesn’t want those players on their squad.

But despite the presence of that dynamic duo, Lincecum and Cain have All-Star ability

  • Offense was pathetic in 2008
  • Failure to acquire big-league hitters will sink the ship
  • Lincecum and Cain, both 24, emerged as big-time players last season. San Francisco Giants betting fans watched the whispy Lincecum lead Major League Baseball in strikeouts while going 18-5 with a 2.63 ERA. Cain was very effective in his own right, posting a 3.76 ERA, but he suffered through the worst run support in the league and went just 8-14.

A few veterans who have seen better days round out the rotation. Randy Johnson (11-10, 3.91 ERA) arrives from Arizona after enjoying a successful second-half to 2008. If you bet on the Giants, you’re no doubt familiar with Barry Zito, a serious free agent bust. The former Cy Young winner allowed a 5.15 ERA last season, far worse than what you’d expect from a $100-million man. Still, those four players should combine to form a very solid rotation, with Jonathon Sanchez (9-12, 5.01) bringing up the rear.

On the other hand, the lineup leaves much to be desired. The offense scored an average of less than four per game last season, good for second-last among National League clubs. If you’re following MLB odds, there isn’t much reason to believe it will be any better this season. There isn’t single intimidating hitter in the bunch, as the Giants managed just 94 homers a season ago, with Bengie Molina leading the way with 16 homers. Many Giants betting fans speculated the team would make a run at Manny Ramirez but nothing ever materialized. Instead, they’ll have to settle for Edgar Rentaria; his .270 average, 10 homers and 55 RBIs can’t cure this sickly group.

There are pieces in place for success, but that’s just it—pieces. This team isn’t ready yet and until it adds some quality hitters to the roster, it won’t be. If you’re going to bet the San Francisco Giants, it better be because Lincecum or Cain is starting that day.
