White Sox vs Reds Odds - Youthful Sox take on injured Reds

Posted by Dale "Skip" Lalonde on 8/25/2009 6:41:13 AM
baseball bettingThe White Sox Reds odds are posted as Cincinnati will get back into interleague play on Friday. It should be an interesting matchup for online betting handicappers to make their picks, since both teams are in the middle of the pack in their respective Central divisions. While the White Sox are employing a youth movement, the Reds are just trying to survive until their regulars can return. With the better pitching, they should control this series.

White Sox Reds Odds: White Sox finish up 9-game road trip in Cincinnati

  • Jose Contreras has been outstanding in June
  • Johnny Cueto leads the National League in ERA
  • Aaron Harang is much more effective at home than on the road

White Sox Reds Odds: Jose Contreras (2-5, 5.32 ERA) vs Bronson Arroyo (7-5, 5.36 ERA)

Jose Contreras has struggled badly this season, but the sportsbook odds makers for Friday’s line will have to take his recent performances into account. Contreras has pitched 16 scoreless innings in June while giving up just three hits in those two starts. His ERA has dropped from 8.19 at the start of the month to 5.32. The White Sox Reds odds will favor Bronson Arroyo and the Reds, but stick with Contreras, who is on fire right now.

White Sox Reds Odds: Clayton Richard (2-1, 3.76 ERA) vs Johnny Cueto (6-4, 2.17 ERA)

Johnny Cueto is the National League leader in ERA, but interestingly enough, he struggles at The Great American Ballpark. At home, Cueto is 1-2 with a 3.18 ERA, but he’s 5-2 with a 1.53 ERA on the road. Part of the issue has been that Cueto has received a really poor run at home. The Reds have provided an average of just 3.2 runs per game for Cueto’s home starts. On the other hand, Clayton Richard has a nice 3.76 ERA, but he’s struggled in June. He’s allowed eight earned runs in just 15 innings pitched this month.

White Sox Reds Odds: Mark Buehrle (6-2, 3.43 ERA) vs Aaron Harang (5-6, 3.65 ERA)

The White Sox Reds matchup on Sunday will pit two former staff aces against each other, and both pitchers throw better at home. Harang is 1-4 with a 4.47 ERA on the road, but is 4-2 with a 2.70 ERA at home. His home WHIP is a measly 1.20 compared to his road WHIP, which is a normal 1.50. Buehrle also pitches better at home but he won’t have that luxury in this matchup. His road ERA is 4.64, as opposing hitters are batting nearly 50 points higher against him on the road. It’s easy for MLB betting experts to realize that the Reds have the advantage in this matchup.
