After losing three straight games, the Minnesota Golden Gophers fell from the final spot in the national rankings to join the Illinois Fighting Illini as two teams from the Big Ten that have fallen completely out of the top 25 this season. Both will try to get their seasons back on track while battling for position in the conference, as the Fighting Illini enter this contest as losers of three of their last four.

This game marks the lone meeting between these teams this season as they battle for fourth spot in the Big Ten, with the Golden Gophers trailing Illinois by just a half-game as part of a log jam in the middle of the standings that also features Michigan State and Penn State. Neither team has impressed much over the last month, but one will have the chance to get back in the sportsbook promo win column this Thursday.

The Fighting Illini have been far too tentative at times this season, and head coach Bruce Weber has asked his stars to be more aggressive. That onus falls on leading scorer Demetri McCamey as much as anybody, as the senior guard has averaged 14.7 points and 6.7 assists per game. McCamey rose to the task by hitting a three-pointer with 40 seconds left against Penn State to pull his team within three, and then hit a pair of free throws to make it a one-point game on the next possession, but it wasn’t enough as the Fighting Illini fell 71-70. In order to prevent the same thing from happening against Minnesota, players such as Mike Davis and Mike Tisdale will need to do more offensively.

Shutting down McCamey will be the sticking point for a Golden Gophers’ team that really struggled to contain David Lighty and Jared Sullinger in their loss to Ohio State. Every Buckeyes’ starter tallied double-digit point totals in that loss, and in order for Minnesota to bounce back they will need to do a better sports betting job of pressing their opponent and forcing turnovers. At the same time, the Golden Gophers must stop turning the ball over, as they did 23 times against Ohio State. Minnesota is lacking the talent that helped them to a four-game winning streak before this bump in the road, and now Blake Hoffarber is wearing a brace on his right knee.

Minnesota head coach Tubby Smith needs freshman Austin Hollins, Chip Armelin, and Maverick Ahanmisi to step up their games with Al Nolen out, and so far he has liked what he’s seen. However, the Golden Gophers are lacking that true explosive presence that the Fighting Illini boast in McCamey, and that will make the difference.
