They’re no Celtics/Cavaliers, but the Spurs vs Mavericks odds are gradually becoming a solid rivalry. The teams played each other dead even this season, each winning a game in the other’s house. Five months ago, this NBA betting matchup would’ve been a cinch for the Spurs, but now they’re banged up while the Mavs played their best hoops of the year down the stretch. Could the Mavs catch the Spurs napping?

2008-09 hasn’t been a storybook season for the Spurs. Stalwarts Tim Duncan and Tony Parker were nicked up at various points in the season and, much to the chagrin of NBA betting fans who ride the Spurs, Manu Ginobili missed 38 eight games – and will miss the entire playoffs – with a stress fracture in his ankle.
Losing one of the big three is a massive blow to the Spurs odds, especially since Tim Duncan is starting to get long in the tooth; the Big Fundamental’s 19.3 points and 10.7 boards per game were both his second-worst single-season marks. If Duncan can’t keep his game at an elite level, more pressure is on Tony Parker to excel.
Luckily for the Spurs odds, Parker is still in his prime – can you believe he’s only 26? – and arguably coming off his best regular season to date. He seems ready to become “the guy” you can count on for sports betting odds.
With the Suns missing the playoffs, it’s safe to say no team faces more pressure this postseason than the Mavericks. After three straight years of heartbreak – an NBA Finals loss to Miami, a first-round sportsbook upset against Golden State after winning 67 games, a first-round loss to New Orleans – it’s now or never for the Mavericks odds. Another early exit will light the match that starts a firesale in Dallas.
The Mavs have a bit to be optimistic about; they really responded after Mark Cuban’s midseason tirade, going a respectable 23-13 over the last three months of NBA betting. Dirk Nowitzki can still score with the best of ’em and Jason Terry is the frontrunner for sixth man of the year.
CRAIG’S PICK: There’s no denying the Mavs played the Spurs tough this season, so the Spurs vs Mavericks odds are among the tighter first-round matchups. But we’re talking about the Spurs, here. They’re playoff-hardened warriors. Tim Duncan can still get the job done on one leg and Tony Parker should abuse the aging Jason Kidd. Bet on the tougher, savvier, better-coached Spurs to ride Parker to victory. This series won’t go seven games.
