Boxing Betting - Why Jones Jr. will dominate Lacy
The Jones Jr. vs Lacy odds matchup is set to get boxing back into the mix after several UFC events have taken the spotlight - but not many online betting cappers are clamoring about this contest. While Jones Jr. is an eight-time champ, both he and Lacy just aren’t that relevant at this point. Jones Jr. is a heavy favorite and he should take care of business rather easily on Saturday.
Jones Jr. vs Lacy odds: Jones Jr. to win battle of the hooks
- Jones Jr. is clearly past his prime
- Lacy has had trouble with elite fighters
- Lacy has the power, but Jones Jr.’s boxing savvy will reign supreme
The Jones Jr. vs Lacy odds list Jones Jr. as a huge -500 favorite in the sportsbook for his bout against Jeff Lacy on Saturday, August 15th. Although Jones Jr. is doing everything he can to help sell this card – such as dressing up as Captain Hook at the press conference – he just isn’t the fighter he once was. Jones Jr. is past his prime, there is no doubt about it. He’s been past it for several years but just can’t give up the sport. Even so, Jones Jr. is a legend in the sports of boxing and one of the rare breeds who can still beat an average fighter at his age (40).
Lacy is exactly that: an average fighter. Lacy took a shot at someone decent when he scrapped with Jermain Taylor and was handled rather easily. He’s also previously lost to Joe Calzaghe.
Both fighters’ skills have deteriorated in the last couple of years for different reasons: Jones Jr.’s cat-like reflexes have disappeared with age, while Lacy has lost most of his power since injuring his shoulder a couple of years ago. Jones Jr. still has his boxing savvy, which should be the difference in this fight. He probably doesn’t have the heavy hands to end the fight, but he does have the skill to win a decision rather easily. Lacy will have to rely on his power and hope to catch Jones Jr., but that’s a much less likely scenario.
The boxing betting community is going to back Jones Jr. heavily on this fight, even though the Jones Jr. vs Lacy odds are discouraging bettors to back the favorite. While Jones Jr.’s skills have waned, the reality is that Lacy is just a mediocre fighter that would need to perform above and beyond what we’ve seen from him in the past to win.
THE GUN’S PICK: Jones Jr. by unanimous decision.
