If you bet sports online, you've probably watched the Blue Bombers off to such a sluggish start, it looks like the CFL East division will come down to the Montreal Alouettes or the Toronto Argonauts. With similar talent on their respective rosters, it will make CFL picks exciting down the stretch.
Montreal (4-3) hammered Winnipeg last week, earning a 39-11 victory. Quarterback Anthony Calvillo was in the middle of the action as always, throwing for 290 yards and a touchdown. Calvillo is having a typically great season and has already racked up 17 touchdowns to just five picks. Thanks mostly to him, the Alouette offense has as much juice as ever (and leads the Canadian Football League in points).
The Als defense shut down the Bombers, though everyone seems to these days. The “D” is ranked second in points allowed this season, though Toronto will be a much bigger test. Still, it's no surprise, with quality players on both sides of the ball, that Montreal gets the edge in the CFL betting lines.
The Argonauts (3-4) suffered an embarrassing 45-21 defeat against the underdog Ti-Cats last week, the second time that's happened this season and greatly benefiting anyone in online betting who backed the underdogs that week. Hamilton rushed for over 200 yards despite not having star running back Jesse Lumsden in the lineup.
Toronto's leaky defense also allowed Richie Williams to have a brilliant day, as he threw for 293 yards and three scores. It's almost shocking the CFL betting lines don't favor Montreal even more, considering how awful that performance was.
Toronto's offense hasn't found much consistency this season. Prized free agent Kerry Joseph three two interceptions and no touchdowns against Hamilton while barely completing half his passes. His frustrating play makes online betting and CFL picks all the more unpredictable. Seeing back-up Michael Bishop in action soon won't be terribly surprising.
Both teams have been great at covering the spread lately. Montreal has covered in seven of its last 10 games, while Toronto is 13-5-1 against the spread over its past 19 contests. The Alouettes have the edge when they meet, however, covering the spread in six of the last eight games they've played in Toronto. That should make bettors a little more comfortable with the favorites when making CFL picks.
Until the Argonauts figure out there quarterback situation - be it getting Joseph on track or putting Bishop under center - the odds are stacked against them.
Guy's pick: Montreal
