Florida's Tebow leads pack as favorite to win the Heisman Trophy
Looking for an edge in your college football betting? Today, our offshore sportsbook will review the top five candidates to bring home the hardware in 2008 for you sports betting fans.. Keep on eye on the Bettor's Edge next week, when we'll review some dark horse candidates.
Florida's Tim Tebow (+250 Heisman odds) is the favorite after becoming the first underclassman to win the Heisman Trophy. His 2007 campaign was certainly impressive, as he punished opposing defences in the air and on the ground. Tebow racked up an unbelievable 55 total touchdowns (32 passes, 23 runs). He also gutted his way through a tough shoulder injury. There's lots of weapons in place, but his biggest drawback will be the reluctance of voters to award the Gator the award twice in a row.
Missouri quarterback Chase Daniel (+450 odds) is a favorite of mine. He's got a lot of juice, moxie, whatever you want to call it. As a junior last year, Daniel led the Tigers to a 12-2 season and their highest ranking ever. He finished third in Heisman voting after throwing 4306 yards and 33 touchdowns. He impresses much beyond the numbers though. At just 6'0 tall (and that might be generous), Daniel simply gets more done with less than just about any other player in NCAA football.
Chris Wells (+450 odds) is likely to get a lot of Heisman action too. The hulking running back was responsible for putting up a lot of points in Ohio State's offense last year, when he rushed for over 1600 yards and 15 touchdowns. At 235 pounds, you'll be hard pressed to find a tougher player to line up in the backfield. I'm betting Wells busts out in a big way this season.
If he can gain some better name recognition, Knowshon Moreno (+700 odds) might make a nice (slight) underdog pick in the Heisman race. Getting that recognition might not be a problem considering many prognosticators are picking Georgia to win the National Championship. Expect him to surpass last year's totals of 1334 yards and 14 touchdowns.
Do-it-all speedster Percy Harvin (+800 odds) rounds out the top five favorites. The versatile Florida Gator is blazingly fast, so his coaches try to get him the football in tons of different ways, be it lining him up in the backfield or having him spread wide. In 2007, it worked to the tune of 1622 yards from scrimmage and 10 touchdowns. Barring injury, he's a safe bet to put up even more in 2008.
Tebow, Daniel, Wells, Moreno and Harvin comprise a pretty impressive group of Heisman favorites. Check in next week for our review of underdogs, and visit the betonline.com Sportsbook for all your college football betting odds.
Blake walked onto his college football team and had a brief stint as an assistant coach after he graduated. He brings a sharp mind to the world of sports handicapping. Blake understands the nuances of the game that only someone who has played would understand, and he was one of the few who gave the Giants a chance against the Patriots in Super Bowl XLII. Thoughts or questions?
