Dallas Cowboys Odds - Winds of change blowing in "Big D"

Posted by Stan Simmons on 8/25/2009 10:35:38 AM
NFL odds NFL betting odds for the Dallas Cowboys this season are cautiously optimistic for the NFC East team, as they look to avenge 2008’s late collapse. After ridding themselves of some off-field distractions, they have a new stadium this year, which may have caused more problems already than last year ever could. Sportsbook players will be following “America’s Team” very closely.

Dallas Cowboys odds: +1200 to win Super Bowl XLIV

  • Romo needs to step up for Cowboys to be a sportsbook favorite
  • Ware leads aggressive, swarming defense
  • Cowboys need to shake off preseason tragedy

The Cowboys cut Terrell Owens in the offseason, as his tantrum about the Tony Romo/Jason Witten connection was one of the main factors in the late-season collapse. However, the Cowboys have to figure out a way to replace Owens’ 1,052 yards and 10 touchdowns. That means Roy Williams will play a much bigger role in the offense, and of course, Witten will be a major part of the offense. Marion Barber is on the brink of a 1,000-yard season, and Tashard Choice is an excellent back-up. However, it all starts and ends with Romo, who is gaining a reputation as a quarterback who chokes in big situations. Romo was awful in the Cowboys’ last three losses of the season, and this could be his last chance at turning that reputation around as Dallas fans are getting antsy.

The Cowboys’ defense was powered by the 20 sacks of DeMarcus Ware, and they were eighth in the NFL in total defense. But they lost Zach Thomas to Kansas City, and he was second on the team in tackles last year. This means an even bigger role for Bradie James, who had a career-high 116 tackles to lead the team, and Keith Brooking joins the Cowboys from Atlanta. The Cowboys also have to find a replacement for long-time safety Roy Williams, and of course, they released troubled cornerback Adam “Pacman” Jones. Terrance Newman is now the Cowboys’ shut-down corner, and he’ll be eager to get back on the field after missing six games due to various injuries.

Sports betting odds have Dallas at +500 to win the NFC, and +1200 to win the Super Bowl, but first, they must put the devastation of the offseason behind them. A hurricane ripped through their practice facility, and one of their assistants was paralyzed in the tragedy. This is a massive season for the Cowboys, as it’s their first in their new stadium, and it’s their 50th year in the NFL, but it’s not off to a good start. On the field, the Cowboys had a poor draft, so they’ll depend heavily on the veterans. All eyes will be on Romo, who hasn’t dealt well with the pressure that comes with being the Dallas quarterback. The defense should hold up their end of the bargain, and now that there are tentatively no distractions, there is no excuse for the Cowboys to miss the playoffs, even playing in the NFC East, arguably the toughest division in football. One thing is for sure: it will be a very interesting 2009 in Dallas, so consider the Cowboys odds very closely.
