Why To Bet On Boise State
The Broncos have a terrific offense led by Heisman Trophy candidate Kellen Moore, but it’s their defense which is really the backbone of coach Chris Petersen’s ballclub. Boise State is allowing an average of just 11.5 points per game and has given up as many as 30 points only once… in the season opener against the Virginia Tech Hokies on Labor Day. Nevada’s pistol offense is a very strong and high-powered attack; if Boise State’s defense can hold Nevada to 30 points, the Broncos should like their chances a lot. Moore and the rest of Boise’s offense should have a field day against a Nevada defense that has fattened up its numbers against bad teams but was overpowered by Fresno State (even though Nevada won, 35-34). Boise can establish the running game in this contest with the two-headed monster of Doug Martin and Jeremy Avery. Martin is more of a straight-ahead bull-rushing power back, while Avery offers more speed and a change of pace. If The Broncos can establish Martin and Avery between the tackles, Nevada will be vulnerable to play-action fakes from Moore that will lead to vertical passes. Titus Young and Austin Pettis are two elite receivers who will severely test Nevada’s secondary. As long as Boise can succeed with the running game, the Broncos can then pass the ball over the top to hit big plays. When one realizes that Boise has scored fewer than 37 points only once this season – also in the opener against Virginia Tech – the point remains that if BSU’s defense can merely contain Nevada’s offense, the Broncos should get out of Reno alive, and continue onward in their push for a spot in either the Rose Bowl or the BCS National Championship game.
Why To Bet On Nevada
The Wolf Pack has a dynamic offense which could give Boise State fits. More specifically, Nevada possesses the trigger man who can outthink and outflank the Broncos in this late-night Friday fight.
One of the noticeable elements of Boise State’s most recent win, a 51-0 triumph over the same Fresno State team that nearly beat Nevada, was that Fresno’s quarterback, Ryan Colburn, made terrible decisions under pressure. Colburn failed to throw the ball away at times and was slow to react to Boise State’s blitzes. Teams need an alert and savvy quarterback in order to succeed against Boise’s defense. Virginia Tech offered Tyrod Taylor, a senior leader who could access a toolbox of physical and mental resources in the midst of mortal combat against the Broncos. Similarly, Nevada quarterback Colin Kaepernick is blessed with the skill set that can make Boise State’s defense look bad. Kaepernick is a gifted runner and a more-than-capable passer who can zing intermediate-range passes with crispness and authoritativeness. If Kaepernick plays his very best game and throws BSU’s defense off balance with his ball fakes and sleight-of-hand wizardry, Nevada could win a shootout against a Boise team that’s averaging 48 points per game.
How The Game Will Play Out
This is by far the biggest test of Boise’s season since the Virginia Tech opener. Nevada will play well on its home field in a late-night game, but well might not be good enough to upset the Broncos, who are so solid on both sides of the ball. That’s the beauty of Boise State: The Broncos can win with offense or defense; Nevada must get an A-plus performance from its offense just to have a chance. Expect Boise State to win, but do take Nevada plus the points. The Wolf Pack lost by only 11 last year in Boise; this year, the outcome should be little different in Reno.
