Miami vs Virginia Tech odds maker breakdown: What’s On The Line
Hands up if you though Miami (2-0, 2-0 ACC) would be a top-10 team at any point this year? That’s what we thought. The Hurricanes have emerged as a top contender to Virginia Tech’s throne in the ACC Coastal, and the Hokies (2-1, 0-0 ACC) haven’t looked that impressive yet this season. Betting Edge: Miami
Miami vs Virginia Tech odds maker breakdown: Offense
The Hurricanes’ offense has been rolling so far this year, and pivot Jacory Harris is the reason. The sophomore has a rating of 184.1, which puts him third in the country. Graig Cooper and Javarris James are a very solid duo at running back, which gives Miami a balanced attack. That isn’t the case for Virginia Tech, who is 106th in the nation in passing. Tyrod Turner has completed over 50% of his passes in just one of the Hokies’ three games this year, although he does have a knack for making a big play when it’s needed. The Hokies are much more of a running team, and Ryan Williams has two straight games with 100 yards or more on the ground. Still, the lack of variety was exposed by Alabama in the first week of the season, and it’ll bite them again. Betting Edge: Miami
Miami vs Virginia Tech odds maker breakdown: Defense
Miami looked much better against Georgia Tech in their 33-17 victory, holding the Yellow Jackets’ triple-option to 95 rushing yards a year after getting run over to the tune of 472 yards. The defensive line was crucial to their success, and end Olivier Vernon had three tackles-for-losses. If the defense swarms to the ball like they did against Yellow Jackets, Miami’s sports betting odds have a high ceiling. Virginia Tech’s defense hasn’t been as solid as in recent years, but they did their job in the red zone in a 16-15 win over Nebraska. They limited the Cornhuskers to five field goals, but they still gave up 207 yards on the ground, which has been a problem so far this season. Betting Edge: Draw
Miami vs Virginia Tech odds maker breakdown: Notable Injuries
Defensive tackle Marcus Fortson left the Georgia Tech game with a leg injury, and the line will be crucial in containing Thomas in the pocket. JoJo Nicolas and DeMarcus Van Dyke also missed the Yellow Jackets, which hurts the depth of the Miami secondary. The Hokies also have an issue in the secondary as corner Stephan Virgil hasn’t played since the season opener against Alabama because of a knee injury. Betting Edge: Draw
Miami vs Virginia Tech betting breakdown: Outlook and Pick
The Hurricanes have dropped five of their last seven at Lane Stadium, and they were whipped 44-14 in their last visit in 2007. The Hokies have lost just twice in their last 19 home games. That won’t matter on Saturday, as Harris showed he had the poise to shake off a rowdy Florida State crowd in Miami’s opener. I’ll take his composure and play over a shaky Tyrod Thomas any day. The Hokies can survive off rushing and defense for only so long. BLAKE’S PICK: Miami +2
