Why To Bet On Michigan State
It’s still very, very, very, very early, but so far this season, the Spartans don’t look like the Spartans normally do.
Talent has not been the issue over the years in East Lansing. As surely as Clemson stubs its toe or Les Miles mismanages the clock, Michigan State Spartans finds the Charlie Brown-and-Lucy formula for face-plants with remarkable regularity. Not this year, however. Michigan State is avoiding upset losses and is handling the pressure of high expectations. Quarterback Kirk Cousins is shrugging off the horrible mistakes he has historically made during his up-and-down MSU career. The Spartans answered the Wisconsin Badgers scoring drives this past Saturday with ballsy marches of their own, roaring downfield with regularity in a 34-24 win. This team was clearly inspired to play well for ailing coach Mark Dantonio, but sentiment only gets you so far in this cauldron of competition. Michigan State needs to continue to finish games and prove to itself that it can master the art of winning. What really helps the Spartans is that their triumph over a solid Wisconsin club marked a very big step in their evolutionary process. This is a team that has a legitimate chance to challenge for the Big Ten championship.
Why To Bet On Michigan
There are only two words you really need to know: Denard Robinson. This will always be the best reason to pick the Michigan Wolverines during the 2010 season.
Robinson is clearly leading the Heisman Trophy race. He leads the nation in rushing yards – as a quarterback, remember – with 905. He is third in the nation in rushing average with 9.23 yards per carry. Michigan is averaging an obscene 9.82 yards per play whenever Robinson runs or passes the ball. These are the kinds of mind-boggling, eye-popping statistics that will emerge when one man accounts for 495 yards of total offense in one game. That's what Robinson did this past Saturday at Indiana, throwing for 277 yards while rushing for 218 more. Robinson is an incredible athlete who has found the perfect system for his talents. Rich Rodriguez needed to find Pat White before his West Virginia teams could thrive, and with Robinson, Rodriguez has unearthed the perfect quarterback for the resurrection project at Michigan. If Michigan State cannot stop Robinson, Michigan will win. This is a trump card the Wolverines are very happy to have in their arsenal.
How The Game Will Play Out
Robinson will score his share of points, but it's important to realize that a number of the teams Michigan has beaten in 2010 – Connecticut, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, and Indiana – were either very overrated or never amounted to much. Michigan State is arguably the first really good team Michigan has faced, and the Wolverines' defense is as bad as their offense is good. Michigan will score 35 points or so. Michigan State will score 40. Michigan State will win this game outright on the road.
