NCAA Football Power Rankings - 'Bama finally surpasses Gators
1. (2) Alabama (7-0): The Crimson Tide took care of a very good South Carolina team, and they welcome pesky Tennessee this week. Running back Mark Ingram has elbowed his way into the Heisman discussion. 2. (1) Florida (6-0): The Gators barely survived Arkansas at home, and if linebacker Brandon Spikes can’t go, this weekend’s trip to Mississippi State could be more interesting than it needs to be. 3. (3) Texas (6-0): Colt McCoy may not get a Heisman, and may lose a thumbnail, but he kept his team on track for the BCS championship game with a gutsy win over Oklahoma in the “Red River Rivalry”. Next up: a tricky trip to Missouri on Saturday night. 4. (5) USC (5-1): After beating then-ranked California and Notre Dame on the road in back-to-back weeks, the Trojans host their nemesis, Oregon State, who have ruined perfect season for USC in two of the last three seasons. 5. (7) Miami (5-1): The Hurricanes’ offense gets plenty of love, but their defense hasn’t given up more than 20 points in a game since the 38-34 classic win at Florida State to kick off the season. You want a BCS dark horse in your sportsbook? Miami is the way to go. 6. (9) Iowa (7-0): The Hawkeyes have a big week coming up, as they’re putting their unbeaten record on the line when they go to Michigan State, where they’ve dropped four in a row. 7. (10) Cincinnati (6-0): The Bearcats handled then-ranked South Florida on the road, but they have to be worried about the status of quarterback Tony Pike, who aggravated an arm injury. 8. (8) Boise State (6-0): For the Broncos to reach the BCS title game, they need to go undefeated, and start spanking teams by like, 40 points a game. 9. (11) Oregon (5-1): The Ducks kick off a tough three-game stretch by heading to UCLA, followed by a trip to Washington and a visit from USC. This is Oregon’s season right here. 10. (17) Georgia Tech (6-1): You know the Yellow Jackets are running the triple option, and no one can seem to stop it. They made a very good Virginia Tech defense look pedestrian. 11. (--) Oklahoma State (5-1): Props to the Cowboys for going along their business without All-American receiver Dez Bryant. However, they could look past this week’s trip to Baylor, as they’ll be waiting for Texas the next week. 12. (--) TCU (6-0): The Horned Frogs have to be on their guard heading to BYU this week, as this is the toughest test their fourth-ranked defense has faced this year. 13. (14) LSU (5-1): The Tigers had a week to reflect on their loss to Florida, and they’ll run into a struggling Auburn offense this week in Death Valley. 14. (--) Pittsburgh (6-1): The Panthers are one of the most underrated teams in the country, and running back Dion Lewis may be the best freshman right now. 15. (18) Penn State (6-1): The Nittany Lions have lost five straight at Michigan’s “Big House”, where they’ll touch down this weekend as college football betting favorites. 16. (--) Utah (5-1): The Utes have won three in a row since losing at Oregon, and they should have an easy journey before heading to TCU and BYU later in the year. 17. (6) Ohio State (5-2): Jim Tressel said he would open up the offense for Terrelle Pryor, but neither “Sweater Vest” and his pivot are having a good season. Pryor is partly to blame, but Tressel’s play-calling is terrible. 18. (4) Virginia Tech (5-2): The Hokies get a week off after their ACC Coastal hopes took a big blow with their loss at Georgia Tech. Their defense was on the field for over 38 minutes. 19. (--) BYU (6-1): TCU ruined BYU’s perfect season last year. This weekend, when the Horned Frogs come to town, revenge is surely on the menu for the Cougars. 20. (16) Oklahoma (3-3): This will be OU’s last time in these rankings, and they’re the New York Mets of college football. Who knows how the season would have been without so many key injuries?
