Texas vs Nebraska Betting Odds - Huskers just a minor speed bump en route to BCS

Posted by Blake Frazier on 12/1/2009 4:48:35 PM

NCAA Football Odds: Pick Longhorns -13.5

bet on footballThe Texas vs Nebraska betting odds has the Longhorns favored by nearly two touchdowns in the Big 12 Championship game. Both teams had some trouble last week against feeble Big 12 opponents, but this week will be a different story. The Huskers have a good defense. So does Texas. Yet only one team has a Heisman-contending quarterback, which will be the difference.

Texas vs Nebraska betting odds: Texas -13.5
WHAT: NCAA football betting
WHEN: Saturday, December 5th – 8:00 PM ET
WHERE: Cowboys Stadium – Arlington, TX

Texas vs Nebraska betting odds maker breakdown: What’s On The Line
Online betting cappers watched Texas (12-0, 8-0) struggle with Texas A&M last week, but let’s face it - Kyle Field is not the easiest place to play. The Longhorns defense had a wakeup call, but they’re still one of the best in the nation and they’ll show up this week in a big way. The Longhorns have been waiting for this moment for an entire year, and they’ll be ready to advance to the BCS Championship game.

Meanwhile, Nebraska (9-3, 6-2) has had a good year for Bo Pelini, but they aren’t on the same level as Texas. A win would send Nebraska to a BCS bowl but they don’t appear ready for that type of stage quite yet. Considering that they’ve lost to Iowa State and Texas Tech this year, it doesn’t look likely that they can top Texas on a neutral site.

Betting Edge: Texas

Texas vs Nebraska betting odds maker breakdown: Offense
The Longhorns have an excellent offense that is led by seniors Colt McCoy, who is a Heisman Trophy candidate at quarterback, and wideout Jordan Shipley. But as the season has worn on, the Longhorns have found new weapons. The offensive line is stout, the receiving corps is getting better by the week, and the running game has a stable of unspectacular contributors. More importantly, the Longhorns have scored 11 non-offensive touchdowns this year, which is tops in the nation. They can manufacture points in many ways.

For Nebraska, NCAA football betting fans know they don’t have the same type of offense. They’re a very conservative group and last week was the case in point: 217 total yards and just 14 pass attempts. This offense just doesn’t have any punch to match the Longhorns point for point so they’ll hope to keep this a low-scoring game.

Betting Edge: Texas

Texas vs Nebraska betting odds maker breakdown: Defense
Both pundits and sportsbook odds makers saw the Longhorns defense get gashed for 39 points by a decent Aggies offense, but this is still one of the best units in the nation. That was the first time this season that the Longhorns had given up more than 24 points in a game. Keep an eye on Earl Thomas, who’s a big-time playmaking safety - he’ll be around the football all day long.

While most of the attention has been on how bad the Longhorns defense played, the Nebraska offense was even worse. The blackshirts gave up plays of 58, 56 and 27 to Colorado and their pitiful offense. Their vaunted run defense also gave up 110 rushing yards to Rodney Stewart. This unit has been very good this year, but they haven’t faced many opponents who boast an offense like Texas.

Betting Edge: Texas

Texas vs Nebraska betting odds maker breakdown: Notable Injuries
Both teams are relatively healthy but the key injury is the sprained ankle of Cornhuskers quarterback Zac Lee. He played on it last week, but considering he’s been fading down the stretch this season, a bad ankle won’t help him be more accurate.

Betting Edge: Texas

Texas vs Nebraska betting odds breakdown: Outlook and Pick
This is just a mismatch for Nebraska, as their young squad is not ready to win a game like this. The Huskers will play very conservatively, which will keep this game tight for a half, but the Longhorns will get ahead and stay ahead. They have the better quarterback and the better defense, which will be enough to get them a comfortable win.

BLAKE’S PICK: Longhorns -13.5
