Why To Bet On Texas
In many ways, the best case for Texas is the case against Texas Tech. Whenever Texas plays this game on the road in Lubbock, it’s very difficult for the Longhorns to pull through – just look at the 2008 game in which Tech stunned Colt McCoy and the rest of the Burnt Orange crew with a Michael Crabtree touchdown play in the final seconds of regulation time. In order for Texas to win this rivalry game on the road, Texas Tech has to be less than its best, and that’s the case in 2010.
Texas Tech is a team that can be counted out of the South sweepstakes at this early stage of the season. After a solid decade of Mike Leach, the Red Raiders hired Tommy Tuberville to lead them into the next decade. No coach is exactly like Leach, but there are several people in the football industry who possess at least a piece of Leach’s ultra-aggressive aerial approach to offense. Tuberville isn’t one of those fellows, and that’s an indication Texas Tech is in the midst of a substantial cultural change. It will likely take multiple seasons for the Red Raiders to recruit and coach a different kind of player with abilities tailored to a Tuberville offense. In 2010, Tech will be moving toward a new identity, and that’s no way to beat Texas… not at a school which is left with the players Texas generally refuses to select.
Why To Bet On Texas Tech
The Tech case will in many ways focus on Texas’ deficiencies. First of all, the Longhorns have played cupcakes their first two weeks, fattening up on a dish of Rice and then a side of Wyoming. Texas hasn’t been tested, and that means young quarterback Garrett Gilbert hasn’t been thrown into the fire yet. A road conference opener in Lubbock will take the measure of Gilbert’s poise, and if he throws a few interceptions, Tech could very well make a strong push at an upset and – at the very least – keep this game competitive and uncertain well into the fourth quarter. The more the game can be shortened, the more Tech can sustain aspirations of springing a surprise and ruining Texas’ season.
How The Game Will Play Out
The Longhorns will play this game close to the vest and do whatever they can to protect Mr. Gilbert. Texas will pound the ball between the tackles and aim to wear down Tech in the second half. The Red Raiders – who do not have the veteran offensive line they owned during their 11-1 regular season in 2008 – will find it very hard to outplay and outmaneuver a strong Texas defense. In a relatively low-scoring game, Texas will prevail.
