Virginia Tech Hokies Odds - Offense must improve to fulfill BCS dreams
The Virginia Tech Hokies odds, listed at +1500 to win the BCS, reflect a team on the rise. The Hokies may not get the fanfare of USC or Florida, but they can’t be ignored in NCAA football betting this season. Their defense is outstanding and, if the offense can step it up, Virginia Tech could improve on its 2008 Orange Bowl victory.
Virginia Tech Hokies odds: Defense the driving force behind VT’s success
- Pass rush is strong
- Secondary among the nation’s best
- Quarterback Tyrod Taylor is a great athlete but must improve as a passer
When you place a bet on VT at the offshore sportsbook, chances are you’re doing it because of your immense faith in the defense. The Hokies were something special last season, ranking seventh in the nation in total defense. They were 14th against the run and 16th against the pass, so they’re strong all over the field. While they’ve lost some key regulars like Purnell Sturdivant, Victor Harris, Orion Martin and Bret Warren, they still have plenty of talent.
Defensive end Jason Worlids leads a vicious pass rush that ranked 26th in sacks last season. The linebacker corps is a bit depleted but has experienced guys like Cody Grimm ready to step up, so the Virginia Tech Hokies odds of playing great interior defense look good again. We know what the secondary can do; led by ball hawk Stephan Virgil, they force lots of turnovers and are simply among the nation’s best.
The main question marks surrounding the Virginia Tech Hokies odds involve the offense. It’s not so much the running game; it ranked a respectable 35th in the nation as grinder Darren Evans topped 1,200 yards. The key will be the passing game. Starting quarterback Tyrod Taylor is a good athlete and showed last season that he can make plays with his hands and feet. However, he has to be more consistent and the Hokies need him to stay healthy for a full season.
Taylor has decent targets in tight end Greg Boone and wideouts Jarrett Boykin and Danny Coale. It’s just a question of whether or not Taylor can get them the football. Taylor ran for seven scores last season but threw just two touchdown passes versus seven INTs. That’s simply unacceptable for a championship team.
Thanks to their stellar “D,” the Hokies will contend, especially if they can beat Alabama in a crucial season opener. However, if VT really wants to be taken seriously, the passing offense – and protection from the O-line – must improve.
