New York Jets Odds – New era dawns with Ryan, Sanchez
It’s tough to figure out New York Jets odds if you’re an online sports betting fan. Last season, when Brett Favre arrived, the odds for the team to win the Super Bowl increased greatly but the team didn’t even make the playoffs. After another busy offseason including some big splashes, Jets odds for the Super Bowl are back on the rise. Are they worth a shot?
New York Jets odds: +4500 to win Super Bowl XLIV
- Mangini and Favre era over in New York
- Defense leads the way under new coach Rex Ryan
- Hopes rely on rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez
The New York Jets odds for the Super Bowl indicate they don’t have much of a chance to win it all this year. With a rookie quarterback running the show, it would appear that the best case scenario for the Jets would be to have a Matt Ryan/Joe Flacco situation and hope for a surprising playoff berth.
The Jets will play in a new stadium and there is a general buzz about the team. Heading into the offseason, there was very limited optimism regarding Jets odds this season as Brett Favre retired and head coach Eric Mangini was fired.
But General Manager Mike Tannenbaum moved quickly and planned a new direction for the team. Former Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Rex Ryan will take over the team but the good news is he has many veterans to work with.
On offense, Thomas Jones, Jerricho Cotchery and a veteran offensive line are carried over. On defense, the Jets’ odds are improved greatly because Darrelle Revis, Kris Jenkins, Shaun Ellis, Calvin Pace, David Harris and Kerry Rhodes all return. Tannenbaum also made some bold moves in the offseason, adding former Pro Bowl cornerback, Lito Sheppard and also signing Baltimore Ravens stalwart linebacker Bart Scott.
Given the amount of high-quality veterans on this team, it’s pretty clear the Jets don’t have many holes but they also don’t have much time to win. Their window of opportunity is open but it’s unclear whether the offense will be up to speed with the stellar defense.
The defense will clearly carry the Jets this year – and their sportsbook odds for the Super Bowl – and, depending on how quickly the offense can catch up, will determine how far this team goes.
While there were changes on the coaching staff, one coach that remained is offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer, which should make the transition to new quarterback Mark Sanchez much smoother.
This is definitely not a high-octane offense by any stretch of the imagination but with a solid defense, a decent running game and a good young tight end in Dustin Keller, Sanchez is stepping into an ideal environment for growth. Often times a new quarterback will walk into a situation where the cupboard is bare but that’s not the case here.
Even so, Sanchez will be a rookie and even though Flacco and Ryan had fantastic rookie seasons last year, Jets betting handicappers will have to temper expectations of Sanchez.
As Sanchez grows, so will the Jets odds for the Super Bowl. For now, since the Jets are relying on an unproven rookie to take them to the promise land, they can’t be trusted for betting purposes.
