NFL Betting - New England Patriots Still Rule AFC East
2008 NFL betting:
- Will the New England Patriots go undefeated again?
- New York Jets busy offseason will put team back in playoff contention
- Can the young Buffalo Bills make some noise?
With the New England Patriots and Miami Dolphins, the AFC East covers both the good and bad ends of the spectrum. But for the sports betting community, the only relevant thing is who wins this division.
Examining football future bets for the AFC East reveals the Patriots getting the biggest odds of any division favorite at -800 AFC East odds. New England returns last year's unit virtually entirely intact, but it got younger by infusing some key players in the draft. With Tom Brady, Randy Moss and head coach Bill Belichick back, something catastrophic has to happen for the Patriots to lose this division.
The New York Jets (+1500 AFC East odds) had an active offseason, acquiring several veteran players via free agency. They picked up former Pro Bowl defensive tackle Kris Jenkins in a trade while signing linebacker Calvin Pace and right tackle Damien Woody via free agency. They also added two first-round picks in linebacker Vernon Gholston and tight end Dustin Keller.
The Jets will be the Patriots' main competition mainly because they've beaten this team before under coach Eric Mangini; they have confidence against them every time they play. Everyone else in the division is intimidated by the Pats.
The Buffalo Bills (+800 AFC East odds) are expected to finish second according to the odds, but that might be a tall task. The Bills have a young corps that should get better but their schedule includes Seattle, San Diego and Cleveland at home and trips to Jacksonville, Arizona and Denver on the road.
The Bills can put themselves into position for a playoff race if their young quarterback, Trent Edwards, experiences some serious growth in his second season and if a young defense can go from being solid to dominant.
The Miami Dolphins (+1800 AFC East odds) - the one-win Miami Dolphins?have had a tumultuous couple of seasons no thanks to Nick Saban. With Bill Parcells running the show, they are building a steady foundation but can't win the AFC East this year.
Laying the juice on the New England Patriots may sound a little crazy, but none of the other underdogs are talented enough to take it away from them.
AFC East Odds:
New England Patriots -800
Buffalo Bills +800
New York Jets +1500
Miami Dolphins +1800
