NFL Betting - Baltimore Ravens Could Be Worst In NFL
2008 NFL odds:
- Can anyone be competent at quarterback?
- Is the defense over the hill?
- How is the rest of the division shaping up?
If you bet sports online, you're used to seeing the Baltimore Ravens near the top of the standings. From 2000-2006, they averaged 9.5 wins per season and were frequently buzzing around the playoffs. Now they are the biggest underdog in the AFC North and are only expected to win six games.
The Ravens have been built around a Super Bowl defense that has been carrying the load for the offense. But the defense has aged and the offense might be as bad as ever.
The Ravens don't have a competent quarterback on the roster. Their options are a first-round bust, Kyle Boller, an unproven sophomore, Troy Smith, and a raw rookie, Joe Flacco. Compounding the problems will be a feeble offensive line teamed with a thin wide receiving corps.
The Ravens have a good backfield with Willis McGahee and rookie Ray Rice but do the math: spotty quarterbacking with a lacking line and a weak group of receivers means the Ravens are projected to have one of the worst offenses in the NFL.
If you plan to bet the under each week, the Ravens should be a good play. But when it comes to winning football games and topping the set regular season win total, the offense will pull this team down.
The Ravens have perennially been one of the best defensive teams in the NFL but that might change this year. Several key members are aging and this could be the year it becomes a significant factor.
Starting cornerbacks Chris McAllister and Samari Rolle are 31 (Rolle will be 32 this season), franchise linebacker Ray Lewis is 33, while linemen Kelly Gregg and Trevor Pryce are 31 and 33, respectively.
With an inept offense and an aging defense, the Ravens can't compete in a tough division. The Cincinnati Bengals figure to be improved while the once lousy Cleveland Browns - whom the Ravens used to thump twice a year—are now competing for the playoffs. The Ravens are the worst of the bunch in the AFC North and would be lucky to reach six wins.
Pick: Baltimore Ravens regular season win total under 6

Stan Simmons first tasted football through the college game, but his football handicapping has strictly focused on the professional sport. Not many people devote as much time to the NFL as Simmons. For six days a week he works, labors and handicaps the sport, and on the seventh he rests as the games play out. Thoughts or questions?
