Today we'll finish our division-by-division recap of free agency and the draft by examining the AFC South.
Some sports bettors liked Houston's (+6000 Super Bowl odds) chances of taking a big step forward after the team traded for quarterback Matt Schaub last season. This year, the team didn't make any blockbuster offseason moves, mostly sticking to the draft. The Texans finally addressed the offensive line, spending its first pick on tackle Duane Brown. Antwuan Molden was chosen in the second round to help out at corner, and third-round pick Steven Slaton is an intriguing addition at running back. Talented but injury prone linebacker Rosevelt Colvin recently signed with the team. Houston suffered no significant losses. They'll count on players maturing and the draft to improve in the tough AFC South.
The Colts (+700 Super Bowl odds) are already loaded with talent, so they weren't in a big hurry to add via free agency. The draft did bring in center Mike Pollack and linebacker Philip Wheeler in the second and third rounds, respectively. Besides the draft, the division favorite laid low. Free agent lineman Jake Scott was lost to the Titans, so Pollack might get a look at guard. Tight end Ben Utecht is also gone, but the offense still has plenty of juice left with Reggie Wayne, Joseph Addai, Anthony Gonzalez and, of course, Petyon Manning. Indianapolis still has enough weapons to spread the field and rack up points in a hurry.
Jacksonville (+1200 Super Bowl odds) isn't the favorite to win the division, but that doesn't mean it's a Super Bowl underdog. The Jaguars won 11 games last season and are clearly gearing up for a serious title run after some big-time action in the draft. A trade gave the Jags two first-round picks, both of which were spent on defensive ends. Those players, Derrick Harvey and Quinten Groves, should improve an already formidable defense. Former Charger Drayton Florence was signed to help at corner. Jacksonville looked to improve the other side of the ball too, acquiring receivers Jerry Porter and Troy Williamson. The Jags also managed to get through the offseason without any significant losses.
Tennessee (+4000 Super Bowl odds) had two important goals this offseason: resign impact defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth and get Vince Young a quality receiver. The Titans accomplished the first, stabilizing their defensive line when Haynesworth agreed to a contract. He'll be joined by free agent end Javon Kearse and rookie rusher Jason Jones. No significant addition was made at wide out. Tennessee did take a flier on tight end Alge Crumpler, a former Pro Bowler who's suffered through injuries in recent seasons. Surprisingly, the team drafted a running back with a high pick for the third straight season, selecting Chris Johnson out of East Carolina.
