49ers Chiefs Betting – 49ers, Chiefs Reverse Roles To Open Season Before Meeting Week Three
Even as the excitement was building inside Candlestick Park as the San Francisco 49ers pulled ahead of the New Orleans Saints for the first time Monday night, there was a feeling in the air that the high may be short-lived. The 49ers did a lot of things right in their 25-22 loss to New Orleans, but unfortunately for head coach Mike Singletary and his team, doing a lot of things right isn’t necessarily enough to beat the defending Super Bowl champions.
NFL Betting: San Francisco 49ers @ Kansas City Chiefs
Online Sports Betting: 49ers – 2
San Francisco was projected to be a contender for the top spot in the NFC West this year, but an 0-2 start has them trailing the Seattle Seahawks and Arizona Cardinals early on. Ironically, the team the 49ers face this week, the Kansas City Chiefs, weren’t projected to be a playoff contender, but have the early division lead after bumping off the defending AFC West champion San Diego Chargers and the Cleveland Browns in consecutive weeks.
Why To Bet On The 49ers?
After looking lost in their season-opening loss to the Seahawks, the 49ers looked like a legitimate Super Bowl threat week two against the Saints, moving the ball both on the ground and through the air against a New Orleans’ defense that had shut down Brett Favre and the mighty Minnesota Vikings offense the week before. Quarterback Alex Smith seems to finally have the confidence and poise to break through, and with playmakers in wide receiver Michael Crabtree and tight end Vernon Davis to throw at, there is no reason to think that Smith won’t continue to improve. The 49ers’ defense has played a couple of solid offenses the past two weeks, but will have to pick up their play against the pass to avoid allowing another opponent to top the 24-point mark.
Why To Bet On The Chiefs?
Kansas City has been one of the most surprising teams early on in the 2010-11 season, starting perfect with two wins for the first time since 2005. Despite quarterback Matt Cassel throwing for just 176 yards and two interceptions in Cleveland last week, the Chiefs’ running backs Thomas Jones and Jamaal Charles averaged 4.15 yards per carry to lead Kansas City. The offense got some help from the defense, as cornerback Brandon Flowers returned an interception for a touchdown to help seal the win. Head coach Todd Haley has gambled in each of the first two weeks and won, but will have to be careful not to live and die by the sword for too long, or it may just catch up with him.
How The Game Will Play Out
It will be interesting to see how San Francisco rebounds from such a tough loss in their home opener, after coming so close to beating the defending Super Bowl champions. The 49ers will travel on a short week, and although an 0-3 start could be insurmountable for a team with postseason aspirations, the Chiefs have been solid on both sides of the ball, and will be well prepared for a team that has many similarities to itself.
