Sports betting players have been racing around for about a week now, trying to absorb all of the transactions in the NFL since the lockout concluded and it has been a wild period with big names moving all over the place. Here’s a look at how the league breaks down in terms of Super Bowl odds, and remember – these lines could still change as teams are still on the hunt when it comes to free agents and trades.

The Favorites

The defending champions from Green Bay (+600) are co-favorites for the Super Bowl along with New England (+600) and Philadelphia (+600), and the Patriots and Eagles made massive splashes when the lockout ended. The Patriots flipped a fifth-round pick to Washington, who were more than happy to end the Albert Haynesworth experiment, and then more late-round picks for 2012 and 2013 went to Cincinnati for Chad Ochocinco, which is going to inject a huge boost of energy into their offense. The Eagles snagged Nmandi Asomugha, the big catch in the free-agent sweepstakes, along with Vince Young, Jason Babin and Cullen Jenkins, who left Green Bay. The Packers didn’t really make any moves during the offseason, but the core of their team is still pretty young on both sides of the ball.

Pittsburgh (+1000) and Indianapolis (+1000) sneak into NFL betting group because they have won titles in the past, and of course, the Steelers lost to Green Bay last season. The Colts are worried over the health of quarterback Peyton Manning, who had neck surgery in the offseason, but he should be ready to go on the back of a new contract (Manning took less money than what was offered to save the Colts in cap space). The Steelers lost out in the Plaxico Burress sweepstakes, but they have more than enough to get back to the top of the league.

The Second Tier

Atlanta (+1200), the New York Jets (+1200), New Orleans (+1200) lead the second tier of NFL betting options, and the Falcons made the big move on draft night when they traded five draft picks to Cleveland for the right to take receiver Julio Jones, giving Matt Ryan another weapon in a dangerous passing attack. The Saints learned how tough it is to play with a target on your back as the defending Super Bowl champions, and they’ll be motivated to erase last season’s upset loss to Seattle. The Jets may be the best choice out of this trio because of their defense, even though they missed out on Asomugha. Burress is now a Jet, and that should help out Mark Sanchez, who is coming off another solid postseason performance.

Baltimore (+1500) and San Diego (+1500) are on the outside looking in, and while they’re talented teams, they just never seem to be able to make it to the next step. The Ravens are getting up there in age defensively (although don’t tell Ray Lewis and Ed Reed we said that), and Joe Flacco has to prove that he can put the team on his back when he needs to. The Chargers are just going to have their hands full trying to hold off Kansas City in the AFC West, but you do have to give them credit for staying above water last year in the face of injuries at receiver and no running game.

The Longshots

Detroit (+2000) and the New York Giants (+2000) lead this NFL betting group, and the Lions are still too young to be a factor in terms of Super Bowl odds, but the Giants could be a force if their once-feared defense can return to its past form. Kansas City (+3000), Tampa Bay (+3000) and Houston (+3000) come next, and the biggest concern for the Chiefs and the Buccaneers is to prove that they’re continuing to get better after surprising people last season, especially the Chiefs, who won the AFC West. The Texans are still looking for their first playoff appearance and are in a division with the Colts.

Chicago (+4000) is a serious option to lay a wager on, given that they reached the NFC title game last year and haven’t really lost any of their big pieces. Chances are, they’re not going to win the Super Bowl and they’re going to have a problem trying to overcome Green Bay, but when it comes to longshots, with their defense the Bears are definitely worth a shot in your online betting book.
