Chargers vs Chiefs odds maker breakdown: The Storyline
It wouldn't be an NFL season without the Chargers brutally underachieving, would it? San Diego's Monday night loss to the Broncos dropped the team to 2-3. Their hopes of winning the AFC West are slim to none, and their Wild Card chances don't look much better. You'd be hard pressed to find another team that gets less from its talent. The Chiefs (1-5), meanwhile, wish they had some talent to underachieve. Kansas City's season-long stink bomb was finally halted with a road victory over the Redskins. Everyone knew this was going to be a rebuilding job, but that doesn't make it any easier to watch for betting fans.
Chargers vs Chiefs odds maker breakdown: Offense
Surprise! San Diego's one-dimensional offense finally caught up with it. LaDainian Tomlinson produced a pitiful 70 yards on 18 carries - which, sadly, was easily his best effort this season - and the San Diego offense managed just 16 points. Philip Rivers was solid, but he's quickly proving he can't do it alone. Kansas City's offense is a train wreck, however. Matt Cassel looks like a complete bust to most sports betting fans - he's averaging 5.5 yards per attempt this season - and the Chiefs came up with just three field goals last Sunday. Luckily, it was against Washington. Betting Edge: Chargers
Chargers vs Chiefs odds maker breakdown: Defense
San Diego's defense has grown almost completely toothless. It looked decent against the run versus the Broncos, holding Denver to 3.1 yards per carry, but the inability to reach the quarterback is killing the team. The Chargers notched just one sack - the lack of pressure allowed Kyle Orton to go 20/29 with two touchdowns and no turnovers. The Chiefs "D" isn't exactly setting the world on fire either. Holding Washington to 265 yards is nice, but it's not a bold statement. Kansas City is susceptible through the air (249 passing yards allowed per game) and on the ground (130 rushing yards allowed per game). At the end of the day, the Chargers still have more talent, even if they're not maximizing it. Betting Edge: Chargers
Chargers vs Chiefs odds maker breakdown: Notable Injuries
San Diego's injuries have been well documented; Jamal Williams is done for the year, Nick Hardwick is out indefinitely, and Stephen Cooper is limited by a knee injury. Kansas City has the usual bumps and bruises but is generally healthy. Betting Edge: Chiefs
Chargers vs Chiefs odds for total: 43.5
Neither team is playing well, but the Chargers enjoy a significant talent advantage, especially on offense. San Diego should rack up the points—playing the pitiful Chiefs a week after the stingy Broncos will feel like opening the floodgates. Kansas City will tack on a meaningless touchdown or two, though, and drive the total up. Take the over. Pick: OVER 43.5
Chargers vs Chiefs betting breakdown: Outlook and Pick
Kansas City and San Diego are playing poorly, but at least the Chiefs have a good excuse—they suck. The Chargers, on the other hand, should be producing better results. This is still a talented team, particularly on offense, and it won't have many problems beating back a weak opponent like K.C. Bet on the Chargers to cover. STAN’S PICK: Chargers -4.5
