Chargers Jets Betting – Jets’ “D” Comes Up Huge Against Chargers
Online betting players have been waiting for the New York Jets’ defense to shut down teams like we’re used to seeing, and the Jets put on a good show on Monday night, albeit against a poor offense. The Jets will get a stiffer test this Sunday when San Diego comes to town, but the Chargers have some injuries on offense and the Jets will take advantage of this.
What: NFL Betting
When: Sunday, October 23rd, 1:00 PM ET
Where: MetLife Stadium, East Rutherford, NJ
Pick: New York Jets +1.5
Why Bet On San Diego Chargers (4-1 SU, 2-3 ATS)
The Chargers are coming off a bye, and they’re ready to get their No.6-ranked offense back on the field, led by Philip Rivers, who continues to get the job done in San Diego. Having Vincent Jackson back in the lineup this season has helped as Antonio Gates has been struggling with injury for most of the season, only playing in two games. Ryan Mathews has been surprisingly good out of the backfield catching the ball, and he also looks to be recovered from an ankle sprain that bothered him for most of his rookie season. The defense is fourth in the league, and they’re not a unit that takes a lot of risks in the way of going for sacks or turnovers; they keep everyone in front of them.
However, San Diego haven’t been good for NFL betting players as they seem to do just enough to win, which doesn’t help for covering the spread. The teams they’ve beaten for their four wins have a combined record of 4-17, but the Chargers have won by a combined 25 points, and then they lost in New England in their first trip to the Eastern time zone. They also have some injury worries as Gates (foot) is touch and go, even though he practiced on Monday and that’s a good sign. Mathews (calf, wrist) and fellow back Mike Tolbert (concussion) also practiced and it should be in the lineup, but Jackson (hamstring) didn’t practice, so watch the injury reports this week. Rivers is used to not having Gates or Jackson in the lineup, but that doesn’t mean the Chargers aren’t a better team when they’re on the field.
Why Bet On New York Jets (3-3 SU, 2-4 ATS)
The Jets took care of business the way they were supposed to in a 24-6 win at home over Miami, snapping a three-game skid, and their defense kept them in the game until the offense got going. New York forced three turnovers and Darrelle Revis returned one of his two picks 100 yards to the house for a score as the Jets went after Matt Moore every chance they got, racking up four sacks along the way. Mark Sanchez took a while to get going, but he ended up with 201 yards and a touchdown on 14-of-25 passing, while picking up 104 yards on the ground. But the stars of the game were the Jets’ defensive players and they were out to show that they’re better than their numbers this season.
That being said, NFL betting players would like to see a solid effort against a good offense as the Dolphins had an inexperienced pivot; San Diego will prove to be a tougher task, although we should hope that Jackson is healthy because a Jackson-Revis matchup would be a blast to watch. Offensively, the Jets are 29th in the NFL and they looked brutal for the first half of the Miami games; overall, they converted just two of their 13 third-down opportunities. The Jets seem like they don’t know what their identity is; are they a running team or a passing team? Head coach Rex Ryan wants to “ground and pound” the ball, but it’s not effective if the passing game isn’t working and it’s not like they don’t have weapons in the aerial attack.
How It Will Play Out
Early NFL betting lines have the Jets as a 1.5-point favorite at home on a short week, and they’re 4-1 SU and ATS in their last five meetings against the Chargers at home, with three games going over the posted total. San Diego has to go to the east, but again, coming off a bye will help them adjust to the time zone; it wouldn’t be surprising if they were in the Eastern time zone already.
But a short week won’t bother the Jets, in fact, it could even help them as they ride the momentum of the Miami win. The Chargers are banged up offensively and the Jets’ defense was fantastic against the Dolphins. New York can cover all of San Diego’s weapons when the Chargers are healthy, so they should be able to handle them while they’re injured. It won’t be a blowout, but the Jets will continue their roll and pick up a win over the Chargers while covering the sports betting spread.
