Why Bet On Philadelphia Eagles (1-4 SU, 1-4 ATS)
The Eagles couldn’t dig themselves out of a 21-point deficit, falling 31-24 in Buffalo, and they gave this game away as they dominated the Bills statistically, but turnovers raised their ugly head; five of them to be exact, including four picks by Michael Vick. On the day, Vick was 26-of-40 for 315 yards and a pair of scores, and his 90 yards on the ground made him the leading rushing quarterback in NHL history, but still, four interceptions is simply too much to overcome. The Eagles continue to put up big numbers offensively as they racked up 489 yards against the Bills, including 174 yards on the ground, but after the five turnovers, they now lead the NFL in that category.
The defense continues to give up big plays, and they can’t force any turnovers, ranking second-last in that category. They also gave the Bills a pair of first downs due to flags, which is something they’re not good enough to do right now. Kicker Alex Henery missed a pair of field goals in the fourth quarter, which could have turned it all around. Left tackle Jason Peters (hamstring) and defensive end Trent Cole (calf) are unlikely to play this week as well, and this is a make-or-break game for the Eagles; if they lose this, they can essentially forget about the playoffs, which is a far cry from their preseason tag of Super Bowl favorites. The Eagles just need a consistent performance in all three facets, but can they actually get it?
Why Bet On Washington Redskins (3-1 SU, 3-1 ATS)
The Redskins are coming off a bye, so they’re well-rested and have had time to reflect on a start that has surprised many NFL betting players, among others. They’ve been powered by a defense that is sixth in the league, and they’re ranked no lower than eighth in either pass or run defense. The defense knows that they have to be solid because the offense isn’t very explosive, and they’ve held their own against a couple of solid offenses. Offensively, the Redskins look to run the ball as much as possible and they’re eighth in the NFL in that category, led by the trio of Tim Hightower, Ryan Torain and Roy Helu, and any of them can break out at any time, which throws the opposition off. Fred Davis is emerging as one of the best pass-catching tight ends in the league, while the duo of Santana Moss and Jabar Gaffney is surprisingly effective.
But the big question is always going to come at quarterback, where the critics are waiting for Rex Grossman to fall, and he is used to this by now. But the time will come that someone will stop the Washington ground game and it’ll be up to Grossman to lead the team to victory. Do you trust Grossman that much? He is ranked 26th in the league in passer rating and the more that his attempts increase, the more interceptions he’ll throw, it’s that simple. If you can stop, or at least slow down, Hightower and crew coming out of the backfield, you have an excellent chance to beat the Redskins.
How It Will Play Out
NFL betting odds have the Eagles as a 1-point favorite on the road in Washington, where they’re 4-1 SU and 3-2 ATS in their last five trips, with three games going over the posted total. The Eagles should find it easy to get up for this game with an NFC East rival, and they need all hands on deck for this huge game.
The problem is, they’re struggling to stop the run and that plays right into Washington’s hands, allowing the Redskins to control the clock and keep Vick and the high-powered Eagles’ offense on the sidelines. The Redskins also have the speed to contain Vick and LeSean McCoy, and they’ll be motivated for revenge after Philadelphia lit them up in the nation’s capital during Monday Night Football last season. Take the Redskins for the “upset” in your sports betting picks.
