Packers vs Vikings odds maker breakdown: The Storyline
Brett Favre. That pretty much sums it up, doesn't it? After being jettisoned by the Packers (2-1) two seasons ago, Favre finally has a chance to prove they made the wrong decision. He's already enjoyed a 3-0 start with the Vikings—including a miracle last-second pass to win the game against San Franciso last week—but Aaron Rodgers surely wants to justify the team's decision to anoint him the new face of the franchise.
Packers vs Vikings odds maker breakdown: Offense
Adrian Peterson's dominant run came to a halt with against San Francisco—19 carries for 85 yards. Not bad for an "off day." Favre quieted many critics by picking up the slack, throwing for 301 yards and a pair of scores. If Favre is even remotely capable of making a few big plays here and there—and he finally showed signs of it last week—this offense could be very, very scary. Percy Harvin is turning into an absolute force on offense and special teams; he finished with 223 total yards and a touchdown. Green Bay finally delivered a boatload of points after showing so much promise in the preseason. Ryan Grant hasn't been as effective as he appeared in the preseason, but the Pack did produce 152 yards and two scores against Minnesota. Rodgers played well, throwing for 269 yards and two touchdowns. Despite the 36-point outburst against St. Louis, this unit still doesn't feel in synch. Betting Edge: Vikings
Packers vs Vikings odds maker breakdown: Defense
Good luck running against Minnesota. The Vikings "D" has yielded just 3.4 yards per carry thus far, with the longest run being 15 yards. Passing against Minny won't come easily either, as the team has eight sacks this season. One weak spot that might have been exposed against San Francisco is covering the tight end, as Vernon Davis hauled in seven passes for 96 yards and two touchdowns. Still, offshore sportsbook fans can't complain if that's the only weakness. The Hype Machine was working in full force after Green Bay's defense harassed Jay Cutler in Week 1, with many predicting the new 3-4 "D" was coming along faster than expect. The excitement has been curtailed somewhat in the past two weeks, especially after Steven Jackson put up 163 yards from scrimmage. Peterson should be in for a big day. The Packers also only managed one sack against the Rams, meaning Favre could have ample time to pick them apart. Betting Edge: Vikings
Packers vs Vikings odds maker breakdown: Notable Injuries
Minny and Green Bay are relatively healthy. Harvin suffered some headaches through the week leading up to the Niners game, but it obviously didn't affect him once kick off rolled around. Betting Edge: Even
Packers vs Vikings odds for total: 46
Both teams have a lot of big play potential with playmakers like Peterson, Harvin, Rodgers, Greg Jennings and Donald Driver in the mix. There will almost certainly be a couple of long scores mixed in with some clock-eating drives. If you like points, you'll like this game. Total Pick: Over
Packers vs Vikings odds maker breakdown: Outlook and Pick
At 3-0 the Vikings look very legit. Green Bay, one of the NFL's youngest teams, certainly has some great pieces in place but it doesn't look ready to leap into the league's upper echelon. Minnesota excels in all three phases of the game while the Packers haven't even got their best unit—the offense—firing on all cylinders. Couple all the little details with Favre's intense desire to show up his former team, plus a raucous home-field crowd, and the Vikings will advance to 4-0. STAN'S PICK: Vikings -3
