As President Mike Holmgren continues to try to lay the foundation for success in Ohio, his Cleveland Browns will open the preseason against a team that is the model for success in the NFL today in the defending Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers. Holmgren has strong ties with the Packers, and this will be a good test to see how far along his team has come this sports betting preseason.

There are still several question marks for the Browns on both sides of the ball, and Saturday’s game should help bring some things into focus.

The Packers have a ton of weapons on both sides of the ball, but it is very unlikely that they will showcase them for an extended period in the first game of the preseason on the road. Franchise quarterback Aaron Rodgers will be on the field, but it is after he exits when we will have the chance to see some of the depth players make their mark as they look to prove their merit in hopes of making the 52-man roster. Perhaps the biggest area of focus in Green Bay is at linebacker, where the team has lost two of the four starters from last year’s sports betting bonus regular season opener.

Holmgren is hoping that in time Colt McCoy will blossom the way that Rodgers did with the Packers, but it could still take a couple more years before he is ready to take that next step. McCoy has shown flashes of his potential but will need to be more consistent, and learning a new offense for the second straight year doesn’t hurry the transition. He certainly could use more weapons but with a pretty solid offensive line, the Browns are hoping he will be able to maximize the talent around him. Cleveland has consistently struggled against the run since the team returned to the NFL in 1999, and that will be a key area of focus throughout the exhibition schedule.

There will be a ton of pressure on McCoy to perform this season, and although the coaching staff and management have tempered their expectations, the sophomore signal-caller certainly hasn’t. The Browns would love to open the season with a win over the defending Super Bowl champions and make a good impression on the fans, but it won’t be easy given the Packers’ incredible depth at most of the skill positions on both sides of the ball.
