Aaron Rodgers hooked up with Greg Jennings for another touchdown in a 28-20 win over Cleveland, and the Packers’ dangerous duo looks like they’re in midseason form already. Another encouraging sign was four catches from Jermichael Finley, who was hurt for most of last year and if the athletic tight end is fully recovered from his knee injury, the Green Bay offense will be even better. Running back Ryan Grant also got a few touches and he’ll be essential to the Packers’ NFL betting odds this year as teams will obviously be loading up on Rodgers and the aerial attack. Fellow back James Starks may sneak back into the lineup after missing the Arizona game with a bum ankle. Defensively, we’ll see more of the Packers’ starters as the second and third-string players struggled and allowed the Cardinals to have more freedom.
The Packers have some injury worries that are concerning them ahead of this game, such as Starks (ankle), but it gets even worse on defense. Ends Mike Neal (knee) and C.J. Wilson (concussion) will probably miss this game, so this will be a test of their depth. Linebacker Frank Zombo (shoulder) may not make the beginning of the regular season and even though the Packers are deep at outside linebacker, losing one is going to hurt.

It should be no surprise that the Colts’ offense has looked terrible with Peyton Manning on the sidelines, and they didn’t look much better in a 16-3 loss against Washington. Adam Vinatieri kicked a 55-yard field goal to keep the Colts from getting shut out, but that doesn’t help a unit that gained a measly 150 yards. Right now, the competition for Manning’s backup spot between Dan Orlovsky and Curtis Painter isn’t encouraging Indy fans at all, and now news that Manning may not be ready for the regular-season opener may have the Colts in a panic. But it wasn’t all bad for Indianapolis as the defense managed four sacks.
However, the defense did give up 215 yards on the ground and in a division with Houston, Tennessee Jacksonville (three teams with excellent running backs), that isn’t a good sign. The Colts also committed more penalties than in Week 1, so that is something that they’ll have to work on. However, the major sticking point is the play of the quarterbacks, who combined to go 12-of-27 for 95 yards and a pick. Indy fans have been spoiled by Manning, who has never missed a regular-season start, and you would think that the team that picked Manning would be able to find a decent backup for him.
How It Will Play Out
Look for the Packers to be the NFL betting favorites in this contest, and they’re 3-2 SU and 2-3 ATS in their last five regular-season games against the Colts, with four of those games going over the posted total. This game will have the intensity of a regular-season game, or at least close to it, because the starters will play most of the game, and that gives the Packers a massive advantage.
The Colts and their fans have always said that it’s going to be tough to go from Manning to another quarterback, but now that he is legitimately injured with a chance that he may not open the season, Indianapolis should be going into panic mode very soon. No team is molded more after a player than the Colts are with Manning, and without him, the offense is going to struggle because simply put, Dan Orlovsky and Curtis Painter aren’t Peyton Manning.
