The big story in Carolina’s 20-10 win over the New York Giants in their preseason opener was No.1 pick Cam Newton, who struggled to find his accuracy at time, but he also showed why the Panthers were so quick to take him first overall. Newton has a cannon for an arm and his mobility comes in handy behind a suspect line. Even though Jimmy Clausen outplayed him and has the inside track on the starter’s job, Newton isn’t far behind him and he will start for Carolina at some point in the regular season. Tight end Greg Olsen got off to a good start in his Carolina career, snagging a touchdown pass from Clausen, and he is going to be crucial to their success this season as the Panthers are weak at receiver outside of Steve Smith, who is still out with a broken finger. Defensively, the Panthers were led by eight tackles from linebacker Thomas Williams and they held the New York running game to 81 yards on 25 carries.
It’ll be interesting to see how he gets most of the reps under center against Miami as the home fans booed Clausen throughout the game and even though he threw a touchdown pass to Olsen, he also had an errant pass taken back for a score by the Giants’ Michael Boley. Derek Anderson is really on the roster for numbers and will get some work, but he shouldn’t be considered a threat to steal the job from either Clausen or Newton. The Panthers also had three fumbles, losing one, and that has to get better throughout the preseason.

The Dolphins came back from 17 points down in a 28-23 win in Atlanta, and former Panther Matt Moore showed that his move to Miami may have been a good one as he tossed a couple of touchdowns along with a pick, while Chad Henne had a score with two interceptions. Of course, you have to factor in that Moore was playing against second and third-string players, but he still looked very comfortable and poised. The defense showed that it has plenty of work to do as the first team was dominated by the Falcons, but Atlanta is tough to beat at home anyway and has one of the most powerful offenses in the league. The lower-string players definitely gave a good account of themselves with their performance to keep the Dolphins in the game. You may see the Miami debut of Reggie Bush in this game as he sat the Atlanta matchup out, and the Dolphins are counting on Bush to add some explosiveness to the offense, which will boost Miami’s NFL betting chances.
Coach Tony Sparano can’t be encouraged that his quarterbacks combined for three interceptions, and the Dolphins simply aren’t good enough to make that many mistakes, especially in a division with New England and the New York Jets. The defense looked out of sorts in the first quarter and will have to get back on track; Carolina should be a good matchup for the Dolphins.
