Panthers vs Falcons odds maker breakdown: The Storyline
The Panthers are at a crossroads: how far can they go with Jake Delhomme as their starting quarterback? Delhomme had an awful playoff performance last year when he committed six turnovers, and after the Panthers extended his contract by five years - and gave him $20 million in guarantees - he had five turnovers in the opener against the Philadelphia Eagles. If he has another bad game, the Panthers might have to consider someone else. The Falcons were a surprise team last year, and after a dominating performance in the opener, they look like they might even be stronger in 2009. This is an important game for them to separate from the pack in the NFC South. Betting Edge: Panthers
Panthers vs Falcons odds maker breakdown: Offense
The Panthers offense has plenty of weapons and a good offensive line, but sportsbook odds makers know that none of that matters unless Delhomme regains his confidence. He was awful against Philadelphia, and Atlanta will test him once again. Look for him to be a little sharper this week, avoid the turnovers and give his team a chance to win on the road. The Panthers offensive line has to help him out. The Falcons offense looked really good in their opener and tight end Tony Gonzalez is already comfortable in his new digs. This is a very lethal offense with weapons everywhere and they’re going to be a handful for the Panthers mediocre defense. Betting Edge: Falcons
Panthers vs Falcons odds maker breakdown: Defense
The Panthers defense wasn’t given a chance in Week 1, but they should be better this week if the offense doesn’t hang them out to dry. The Panthers gave up 185 yards rushing on 32 carries last week. That’s a bad sign considering they are facing Michael Turner this week. The Falcons revamped defense was stellar in Week 1 and a lot of their new parts looked very strong. Linebacker Mike Peterson was all over the field while cornerback Brian Williams played very well, picking up a fumble. The Falcons held the Dolphins to just 96 yards on 22 carries. Betting Edge: Falcons
Panthers vs Falcons odds maker breakdown: Notable Injuries
Falcons first-round pick Jeria Perry left the Dolphins game with a rib injury, so keep an eye on his status for this contest. The Panthers may have an easier time running if he’s unable to play. Betting Edge: Panthers
Panthers vs Falcons odds for total: 43
NFL betting fans know that Delhomme was awful in the Week 1 contest. If he straightens out, the over should be a good play. The Panthers defense is and will be porous this year, which means the Falcons should be able to both run and score regularly. On the flip side, the Falcons defense played well last week, but should have a tougher time in Week 2 as they’re facing a team that’s hungry to show that last week was an aberration. Take the over as this has the makings of a shootout. Pick: Over
Panthers vs Falcons betting breakdown: Outlook and Pick
The Falcons are a good team but the Panthers really need this game. It’s kind of scary when you are desperate in Week 2, but look for the Panthers to bounce back with a positive performance. They may not win this game but it's still a division rivalry, so it should be closely contested. STAN’S PICK: Panthers +6
