Panthers vs Jets Betting Odds - Jones carries Jets to much needed-win over ailing Panthers

Posted by Stan Simmons on 11/27/2009 11:20:27 AM
NFL lines and spreadsCarolina and the New York Jets have seen their sports betting odds go down since the beginning of the year, especially the Jets, who are struggling as bad as anyone in the NFL. The Panthers head to the Big Apple to face the Jets, but they’ll be missing most of their linebacking corps, and New York will look to take the game out of their rookie pivot’s hands.

Panthers vs Jets betting odds: Jets -3 (Total: 41.5)
WHAT: NFL betting
WHEN: Sunday, November 29, 1:00 PM ET
WHERE: Giants Stadium, East Rutherford, NJ
KEY STAT: These two have split four career meetings
PICK: Jets -3; UNDER 41.5

Panthers vs Jets betting odds maker breakdown: The Storyline
The Panthers (4-6) are coming off a 24-17 loss in Miami, and even though Jake Delhomme had a poor game, at least Carolina is a competitive team again. The Jets (4-6) have now lost six of their last seven after starting the season 3-0, and they were dominated in a 31-14 loss at New England as rookie pivot Mark Sanchez continues to be a turnover machine. The Jets need to stop the bleeding, which gives them the edge.

Betting Edge: Jets

Panthers vs Jets betting odds maker breakdown: Offense
Delhomme was 19-of-42 for 227 yards, a touchdown and a pick against the Dolphins, and the Panthers were 0-of-2 in the red zone. But the rushing attack, led by DeAngelo Williams, ran for 182 yards, and their ability to move the ball takes the pressure off of Delhomme, who has had well-documented problems with picks.

Speaking of, Sanchez has now thrown six picks in his last two games after four interceptions against the Patriots, and the rookie looked completely out of sorts against New England. The Jets’ best bet against the Panthers may be to lean heavily on Thomas Jones, who has four 100-yard games in his last five starts. The Jets also say they changed some codes for Sanchez in regards to play-calling, but we’re not sure if adding this is good for an inexperienced quarterback.

Betting Edge: Panthers

Panthers vs Jets betting odds maker breakdown: Defense
Carolina’s defense is 26th in the league against the run, and the Dolphins racked up 154 yards against them. They’ve had injuries at linebacker to Landon Johnson and Na’il Diggs, which hurts their sportsbook odds tremendously, and they should give Jones plenty of space to work with.

The Jets are fifth in the league defensively, even though Tom Brady carved them up last week in New England for 310 yards. The defense was often put in a bad position by Sanchez’s turnovers, and the Patriots are good enough to take advantage. The secondary is a bit banged up, but they have Darrelle Revis, one of the best cover corners in the league. Look for him to go up against Carolina’s Steve Smith all day long.

Betting Edge: Jets

Panthers vs Jets betting odds maker breakdown: Notable Injuries
End Charles Johnson (pectoral), but linebackers Diggs (ribs), Johnson (knee) and Thomas Davis (knee) are all out. Safety Charles Godfrey (ankle) practiced and is ready to come back to the lineup. Also, watch for end Julius Peppers (hand), who will play with a broken right hand.

New York safety Jim Leonard (thumb) is also a tough guy, as he had surgery on his thumb before the New England game, and then was second on the team with 10 tackles with a cast. Corner Dwight Lowery (ankle) will probably miss out, but Lito Sheppard (quadriceps) looks to return to the lineup. Donald Strickland (concussion) is also out this week for the Jets.

Betting Edge: Draw

Panthers vs Jets betting odds for total: 41.5
Given the turnover problems of their quarterbacks, both teams should look to a more conservative offensive attack, with lots of running. They rank in the bottom half of the league in terms of points scored, so this will be no shootout.

Pick: UNDER 41.5

Panthers vs Jets betting breakdown: Outlook and Pick
There isn’t much between these two teams, and they both have similar gameplans. The difference here is the Carolina injury problem, particularly at linebacker, and that’s the last thing you need when facing the No.2 rushing attack in the league, led by Jones. The New York defense will contain the Carolina ground game, and the Jets get a huge win for their confidence.
